Presentation transcript:

Do Now (10) 1. Write tonight’s homework in your agenda. 2. Make sure that your binder is organized. 3. Complete the Do Now on your Classwork with maximum effort. 4. If you finish early, please read independently. Homework check occurs during this time. You can check the hw yourself if you would like. I often have a student check the hw if it is a simple completion assignment. The hw for this class was a page response to the prompt: How do you plan on growing as a student this year? Hw checkers for each class are: Divyne (Medaille), Valerie (Kenyon), Izora (Amherst)

Aims Check (2) SWBAT analyze the effect of a country’s geography by making inferences, monitoring and repairing comprehension and visualization. SWBAT utilize “test-taking terms” as they answer thoughtful questions about Ancient Greece geography and draw parallels between themes in Ancient cultures. What do these AIMS mean in your own words? Think (for 30 seconds) Pair/Share (30 seconds)

Geography of Greece (8) Do Now: Please turn to the page where you can find information about “Geography and the Settlement of Greece.” On what page is this information found? ________________________________ Read 25.2 “Isolated Communities and the Difficulties of Travel”. Why was travelling by land difficult? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Why was travelling by sea difficult? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Page 247, 4. Travelling my land was difficult because the communities were isolated from one another and the topography (rise and fall of the landscape) was very hilly with dangerous terrain. The roads were not paved and the sharp rocks ruined wooden wheels. 5. Travelling by boat was difficult due to jagged rocks. Boats were uncomfortable and travelers might be attacked by pirates. Sudden storms also prevented sailors from safe travel. Have students look at the map of Ancient Greece. Where is Athens? Where is Sparta?

Pre-Reading the Chapter (5) Criteria for Success with your Partner Fill in as much information as you can about the geography of Greece. Use the whole textbook (glossary, maps, index, etc.) to help you. You may use an atlas if you need to. This is going to be very quick – so make sure you are efficient! Time the class for 5 minutes. Do a group check in to check responses. Make sure students have completed classwork.

Pre-Reading the Chapter (5) Criteria for Success: With your partner please read through the chapter and fill in the correct information in your classwork. This is going to be quick, so make sure you are efficient. Students work in partners to complete this portion of the classwork. Chapter Title: Geography and the Settlement of Greece. Encourage students to use the glossary to define terms and write in their own words.

Describing Visuals (10) 1. Look at the picture on page 246. What do you see? What does the land look like? Visual 1: __________________________________________________________________________ Continue to work out all six visuals with a group of four.

Independent Practice/Homework (30) 1. Complete the remainder of the classwork. 2. Answer all questions completely. 1. Read Athens/Sparta packet and answer all questions completely and with maximum effort. 2. Box unknown words and define in the margins. 3. Make at least 5 inferences. Criteria for Success by the end of Class: Classwork is completed (including Independent Practice). Read over Ancient Greece Family Letter. Put Classwork in Social Studies Handouts section of your binder.
