B1 Key Questions

Describe what makes a balanced diet – and why we need each food type. Define metabolic rate What do we mean by ‘malnourished’? What are the problems with being overweight or underweight What is the importance of cholesterol? Why are people who do more exercise healthier?

How do our bodies defend against disease? What are the roles of the white blood cells? How is natural immunity formed? What is a vaccine? How does it work? How do bacteria get resistant? How are microbes grown safely in the lab?

B1 Key Questions Revision 8th May 2017

What are neurones? What are the sensory organs? What is meant by stimuli? What is the stimuli for each sensory organ? What is a reflex action? Why does it not go to the brain? What are the effectors? What is a sensory neurone; relay neurone’ motor neurone? What is the synapse? Describe the role of hormones in the menstrual cycle Explain how the contraceptive pill works What are the advantages and disadvantages of fertility treatments (IVF) How does the human body control temperature, water/ions and blood sugar? How do plants use auxins to respond to their environment? How can we use plant hormones artificially?

What is the difference between legal and non-legal drugs What is the difference between legal and non-legal drugs? And recreational and non-recreational drugs What is a placebo? Why is it important for drugs trials? Is it ethical to use drugs in sport? How are plants and animals adapted to survive? What do animals compete for? What do plants compete for? How can we use pollution indicators to measuring environmental change?

Describe Darwin’s theory of evolution Describe Lamarck’s theory How where Darwin’s ideas eventually accepted? What is natural selection? What is classification?

How is energy lost in a food chain? What does a pyramid of biomass show? How can this be overcome? What are the ethical issues with removing energy loses in a food chain? How do things decay? Why is this important? Describe the carbon cycle How is waste recycled?

Where is genetic information found? How do they pass it on to their offspring? What is the difference between sexual and asexual repruction? What is a clone? How does sexual reproduction lead to variation? How do we clone plants and animals- cuttings, tissue culture, adult cell cloning and embryo transplant What is genetic engineering- how is it done?

Hard bits!

How are organisms involved in the recycling of carbon?

Describe and explain the two things that contribute to obesity?

Describe adult cell cloning and embryo transplants

What makes up a balanced diet and why do we need each food type?

What is a vaccine and how does it work?

What is a reflex action? Describe the pathway of a reflex action.

Why is genetic engineering so important and how is it done?

What is evolution and how did Darwin explain it?

How do hormones control the menstrual cycle?

Why do we need to test drugs before we use them?
