Overview Structure of the University Academic requirements English and Math placement Integrated Seminar Creating a schedule

Ten Different Colleges University of Idaho Ten Different Colleges Departments YOU

Finding Your Academic Home Look at your packet and identify your: College Department Major (assigned from your admissions application)

What if … I don’t want to pursue this major anymore? I’m a double major? Make sure your advisor knows I don’t want to pursue this major anymore? No problem. You can change your major anytime before the first day of school by calling the Admissions Office. Get advised today by whatever department interests you the most. DOUBLE MAJOR For today, get advised by your primary major. Make sure your advisor knows you intend to double major. If time, visit the second major today In the future, you will work with both departments.

Two Sets of Academic Requirements University of Idaho College/Department Core requirements The same for all students Degree requirements Specific courses for your major *** Both sets found in the 2011-2012 Catalog

Know your catalog Everything you need to know Lists all core and degree requirements Departmental contact information University regulations

***Ask which science courses are appropriate for your major.

***Ask which math course is appropriate for your major. ***You must enroll in a math course during your first year.

Math Placement ***You can take a lower level math course, but 108 will not count for your University Core requirements. *** Check with your advisor about Math 160 or Math 170

Integrated Seminar (ISEM) Integrated humanities/social science Taken during the fall or spring of the first year If you have an introductory course in your major during the fall, you should consider taking this course in the spring Does not have to align with your major

General Core Additions Additional items to the General Core Studies section are currently awaiting approval by the faculty. Updated curriculum guides will be available in May No change being considered will affect a first semester schedule

Advanced Placement (AP) Credit See Registrar’s website for a complete list: http://www.uidaho.edu/registrar/transfer/ap Approved AP courses will count in the UI Core based on your AP test score Tell someone today if you intend to have AP credit

Other credit Dual Credit Summer college credit CLEP scores These credits may satisfy your Core requirements. Tell your advisor today if you will have any of these credits.

Degree Audit on VandalWeb

Advocate for yourself! All universities are confusing. If you have questions, please ask someone.

Creating a schedule What to include: ISEM 101 or Humanities/Social Science –3 credits Appropriate English Course – 3 credits Appropriate Math and/or science Course – 3 to 4 credits Introductory Course in your Major – 1-3 credits P.E., elective, etc.

For every hour of class time, you will have to study two hours. Rules of thumb: For every hour of class time, you will have to study two hours. Papers always take longer to write than you think they will. Math is a foreign language. You should practice it everyday.

Schedule for Success 14 or 15 credits your first semester Take an ISEM or humanities/social science course that really interests you Balance difficult courses Take elective courses just for fun Get some exercise
