Properties Of Materials. Physical properties – refer to the chemical or atomic make up of the material, i.e. how well it conducts heat or electricity. (natural) +- Mechanical properties – associated with how the material reacts when subjected to external forces.

Mechanical Properties. Tensile strength – ability to withstand pulling or stretching. Compressive strength – ability to withstand pushing (squashing forces). Shear strength – ability to withstand forces trying to cut the material in two. Torsional strength – ability to withstand twisting or rotary forces. Bending strength – ability to resist bending forces.

The Apprentice Task In Groups of 2, research on the internet definitions of the following 2 mechanical properties. (5 groups of 3) (Scribe, researcher, teacher) Get: a definition Get a diagram or picture if possible to visualise the property. Get: examples of 2 different materials (e.g. one ductile, one not very ductile). You Must present your information to the other groups.
