BRIDGE ASSIGNMENT #3: INTERPRETATION + ARGUMENT “Affordable Housing” in NYC Livia Lin
Is affordable housing AFFORDABLE?
“Affordable Housing” in NYC Affordable housing in New York City is a five-boroughs, ten-year plan. This is a long journey, and there are lots of obstacles should be cope with before it can be successfully achieved. In order to achieve the plan, it requires a major investment in manpower and material resources. It also needs the cooperation of the public, developers, and the government, which means that none is dispensable. Hence, the government should be considerable to variety groups of families. There is undeniable that covering all the aspects related to this plan is extremely uneasy. For example, some low-rent houses are only suitable to those with moderate or low income, and the poorest people are still not able to afford. The affordability in reality is far away from that in the government plan. The Mayor has to adjust the price of the apartments more practically so that different groups of people can get their affordable houses based on their real income. Moreover, there is one problem should not be neglected, which is the wealth gap. The gap between the rich and the poor is so apparent that housing resources are also limited by this situation. Due the fact that some people living in a luxurious life do not really need the houses for living, those houses are either for investments or personal interest. Whereas, the families with difficulties in affording houses require these apartments so badly when the resources are tight. Under the concern with shortage of housing, for example, putting restrictions on the number of houses that can be purchased per family is necessary.
