Done and recommended WMS 1.3 Best Practice for Time and Elevation (T&Z), also adopted by Defence community. Lots of implementation evidence. Could be formal profile if Test Suite developed. WMS 1.3 Best Practice for Ensembles, electronic adoption vote approved. Plugfest scheduled for September during EGOWS at FMI. Could be formal profile if Test Suite developed. WCS2.0 (slice and trim, n-D) more appropriate than WCS1.0. Needs more implementations beside the reference implementation Rasdaman. WCS2.0 Met Ocean Profiles (e.g. cross sections, curtains and trajectories, Swiss cheese, points to WMO Code Lists), available as a discussion paper, awaiting implementation evidence in September before progressing as formal profile. WaterML standard developed by Hydro DWG, already endorsed by WMO. TimeseriesML 1.0 Based on WaterML, single scalar values only, developed. Needs some evidence of implementation. WMO and ICAO weather symbols on GitHub, with links to WMO registries, lots of Metadata, being used operationally in several institutions (but improvements to be done).
Work in progress WCS2.0 GRIB encoding (Daniel Lee, DWD, leading) Ready for public review, but some procedural blockages WCS2.0 Extension: Coverage Collection (Pete Trevelyan, Met Office, leading) finished public review, awaiting implementation evidence. TimeseriesML 1+ needed for vectors and multiple values per time instant. WKT for Calendars (360 days/year, 365 days/year, etc) Improved OWL-Time ontology (Joint OGC/W3C work) First Public Working Draft to be approved by W3C next week. Coordinate Reference Systems (ISO19xxx review) work just starting, via national ISO representatives
Work just starting, or not really started HDF5/OpenDAP/Thredds being considered for OGC Standardisation Vertical CRS? A new CRS SWG has just started to formally review the joint OGC/ISO standard. Climatological period specification? Quite a lot of informal work done in CF-NetCDF community. Data Tiling (slice and ‘DICE’, perhaps work with W3C too) unable to progress this last year for lack of bandwidth, volunteers, but cross domain need now much more visible (3D, Smart Cities, open source city modelling, Hi-res bathymetry, digital terrains, aviation and military simulation, etc)
Other areas of active influene Now Chris is on OAB so get to review all standards documents and discuss issues (such as JSON, registries, APIs, URIs, Linked Data, 2D vs. 4+D, CRS) Also W3C WGs (Spatial Data on the Web, Data on the Web, SVG2) Aviation DWG Defence (DGIWWG) Emergency, Disaster, Law Enforcement & Public Safety DWG (James Penman, Met Office, is Co-chair) Simulation (CDB SWG) Health DWG Future Marine DWG SpectrumML Coverages ISO review
Summary 1. We have altered how OGC works (more open by default); 2. Other communities within OGC recognise and address Met Ocean requirement without our presence; 3. There are signs that the ‘old guard’ 2D versus 4+D ‘new guard’ war is slowly moving in the direction of 4+D; 4. There is acceptance that time is a coordinate rather than just an attribute of a feature. 5. OGC more willing to take external community standards, but insists for eventual integration into OGC stack
Thank you Merci
