Aggresion Replacement Training ART Methods The second international meeting in Prague 16.-17.03. 2016 Aggresion Replacement Training ART

Aggresion Replacement Training ART The main goal is to reduce aggression and violence among youths by providing opportunities to learn prosocial skills in place of aggressive behavior. Creator of this program – Professor of psychology Arnold Goldstein from USA Dr Jacek Morawski brought him to Poland, made his own version adapted to european and polish conditions. His company named Amity organise in Poland licensed trainings for trainers. At the beginning program was present in schools and educational institutions. After that in 2001 project was implemented in prisons. Amity trained psychologists. Why is this program important for prisoners? Teach prosocial skills in place of aggresion Prevents aggresive Prevents recidivism

The program consists of three interrelated components Behaviour component (Structured Learning Training) – what to do? How to behave in the acceptable way adopted in the society to achieve your goals without violence. Emotional component (Anger Control Training – what not to do? – how to avoid impulsive reactions) Cognitive component (Moral Reasoning – how to distinguish what to do from this what not to do – learning of making of decisions.

Learning of replacement of agression means training. No pain, no gain ART® consists of a 10-week, 30-hour intervention for groups of 6 to 8 prisoners three times per week, moderate by two trainers, who have a special certicicate.

Before start, trainer makes a contract with participiants. For example: We are coming on time. We dont disturbe other people when they talking. We raise hand when we are going to say something. To finish the program the participiant must achieve 30 points. Points he can get for activity.

The first part of training is Communication Statements: Atractive: I like this, You are looking very good Avercive: You are stupid, You always make this   Techniques of communication brave communication feedback direct communication indicative communication I will, I dont wont, I am expecting behaviour communication positive communication Please be on time. instead of Dont be late. brave statement FUKOZ Facts, fillings, consequences, expectations, reference Feedback What was good? What can we do different?

Structured Learning Training The aggresive person dont have prosocial skills, because she never learn how to use it. If this person will learn this skills, has a change to reduce agresive bahaviour.   Every skill has some steps. WE are teaching tchem at the beginning according procedur – all skills are written in the small book. The main goal of this part is to change aggresive behaviour into prosocial. Examples of skills How to deal with someone’s anger How to deal with someone’s fear How to avoid problems with others How to deal with accusation

Presentation of scenes – moderated by two trainers Playing roles by participiants Trainers and participiants feedback Home work   Example Asking for help What kind of help do you need? Make decisions, or do you really need help? Think which person can help you and choose the best. Tell this person about your problem and ask for help.

Anger Control Training to teach youth what not to do if provoked. Definition of anger Types of emotions ABC of anger   What should participiant understand during and after the training? You allone are responcible for your anger. Nothing and nobody can not make you angry. You get angry always by yourself. Only your way of thinking and way of doing have an influence on creating of anger course and effects We work on experiences of participians, on the situatons, which happend recently and made you angry How we control anger? What relase my anger: external and internal 2. What is my body talking? 3. Ways of reducing 4. Self instruction 5. prize 6. using of prosocial skill.

Moral Reasoning  Learning – how to make a decision? Definitions of morality Discovering of values Excercise – Replace 10 things, which are important for you. Moral dilemma   ANIMA® Moral inference Alternatives Consequences Stakeholders Motives Empathy

Effectiveness of training exceeds 80%. After 30 hours of the training aggresive behavour is reduced by 80%. The majority of participiants use brave behavours in place of aggresive.
