Hernias By: Saaleha Reece
Description A hernia is the bulging of part of an internal organ or tissue through a weak area of muscle. Most hernias happen in the abdomen. There are several types including inguinal, umbilical, incisional, hiatal, and congenital diaphragmatic. Hernias are common.
Causes A combination of muscle weakness and straining, such as lifting heavy objects. Increased pressure in that area Pregnancy Chronic coughing or sneezing Chronic constipation Extra weight Poor nutrition
Symptoms Pain or discomfort Health Problems A bulge in the area in which the hernia is located A burning or aching sensation at the bulge If the hernia is strangulated, there will be nausea, vomiting, trouble passing gas and having bowel movements.
Prevention Not to smoke since it causes chronic coughing Avoid heavy lifting Use proper lifting techniques Lose weight if you are overweight Relieve or avoid constipation
Treatment/Cures Surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall. Surgery repairs the weakened abdominal wall tissue and closes any holes. Most hernias are closed with stitches and sometimes with mesh patches to plug the hole.
