H.E.S. 2nd Grade Parent Information Night

Sample Schedule Unpack/Morning Work Morning Meeting Writing Workshop Snack (around 10:00) FUNdations Math Lunch/Recess (12:00-1:00) Reading Workshop Read Aloud Special Science/Social Studies/PLTW

Reading Skills 1. Phonics & Decoding Skills 2. Sight Word Recognition 3. Fluency words per min (90 to 100+) expression, phrasing & attention to punctuation, and accuracy. 4. Comprehension * apply appropriate strategies before, during, and after reading to construct literal and inferential meaning. *Provide evidence from text to support all oral, written, and presented responses about text.

What is Reading Workshop? Mini-lesson (about 10 minutes) Skills Strategies Habits of Readers Independent reading (25-35 minutes) Independent Reading Small-Group Work (Strategy Lesson/Guided Reading) Teacher-Student Conference Share (5-7 minutes) Partner-Share (read aloud, acting out parts, word-solving) Celebration of readers

Writing and Spelling Different Types of Writing Narrative – small moment stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end, includes story elements with elaboration. Opinion – pieces where students state their opinion on a topic and support those opinions with details. Information – students collect information about a topic, organize it and write in a way to teach others about their topic. FUNdations - to apply spelling skills, patterns and understanding of words in reading and writing. FUNdations builds upon work from 1st grade.

Math

Math Units of Study Unit 1- Fact Strategies and Problem Solving to 20 efficient strategies for solving math facts structures and mindsets for tackling story problems graphing number relationships Unit 2- Place Value counting and skip counting understanding the value of each digit story problems Unit 3- Shapes and Partitioning identify shapes by attributes partitioning shapes into equal shares

Unit 4- Addition and Subtraction within 100 open number lines, HTO frames place value expanded form story problems Unit 5- Measurement and Data Standard/nonstandard units of measure (in, cm, ft, etc) graphing data collection and analyzing Unit 6- Addition and Subtraction within 1000

Unit 7- Multiplication, Odd and Even partitioning into columns and rows odd and even numbers repeated addition/arrays Time and Money(throughout the units) identify and count all coins and bills showing amounts 2 ways with/without restrictions identify missing coins/amounts when given a total amount telling time to the 5 minute mark quarter to, quarter after, half past, am/pm There will be a winter and spring benchmark assessment in addition to each unit test.

Fact Fluency Students are expected to solve 35/40 equations -addition 2 minutes -subtraction 3 minutes Students will work on their own individual strategies based on the 2nd grade progression **Report card scores will be based on the expectation at each trimester

Social Studies

* Identify N, S, E, W, Equator, Northern 1. Maps and globes * Identify N, S, E, W, Equator, Northern & Southern Hemisphere 2. Neighborhoods and Communities * Understands the parts of a community. * Understands the needs for rules. * Understands the difference between goods and services. 3. Holidays * Compares & contrasts historical celebration of holidays to current celebrations.

Science & PLTW

* Describes the differences between solids and liquids 1. Properties of Matter * Describes the differences between solids and liquids *Using the design process to problem solve 2. Plants * Explain the effects of water, sunlight, and soil on plant growth 3. The Changing Earth * How do we prevent wind and water from changing the earth

Homework

BOE recommends 20-30 minutes of homework a night for 2nd grade students. Homework logs can accommodate busy lives Homework is meant to be practice and engage families in discussions around school (There should be NO tears) Homework will be given weekly starting October 2nd It will include a reading log and math facts to practice

Homework Folders Should be checked every night including Fridays Forms should be put in as soon as they are completed Tell your child when you are putting in a note Home folders need to be returned every day

Book Club We participate in Scholastic book clubs. Order online or send to school. We earn bonus points that are used to build our classroom library. Our Class code is J2HKK

Birthday Celebrations We will honor each child’s birthday If you also wish to send in a birthday treat, please contact me one week in advance to schedule a time All foods for classroom celebrations must be cleared by the nurse

Snack We try to eat snack around 10:00 Please send in a snack that is healthy and easy to eat Please do not send in Juice Breakfast can be ordered from school to eat first thing when students arrive or it can be eaten at snack time

Volunteers Room parent- organize celebrations for our holiday party, Valentine’s Day, our author celebration, and an end of year party. They will also have phone lists in case of any special class announcement. Guest Reader- Parents can sign up for a day to come read to our class At Home Helper- I will send home folders of things that can be prepared by you at home (i.e. cutting, making books, separating book order flyers) Sharing Special Interests
