Bad luck or bad practice? Board of Examiners, Friday 13 2015, Aula B 14.00 Bad luck or bad practice?

What the Board plans to do in the session This includes acknowledging Promote Academic Integrity at the ISS Discuss what constitutes sloppy referencing/plagiarism Help students to write a good essay which does not have these problems the work of others Your own previous work Collaboration Correct reporting results of research Honesty in Examinations Respecting other people’s ideas Developing your own arguments and writing in a clear and focused manner

Board of Examiners – Mandate and Process Responsibility for the assessment procedures including sloppy referencing/plagiarism Process Asks examiners to identify problems of academic integrity in the assignments Studies the reports Has meetings with the students before penalties are applied. Notes are sent to the students on the outcomes and penalties. Checks the returned scripts and finalizes the grades

Why are we here? A rough number of cases normally per calendar year – 6-10 Over 40 cases just for Term I assignments In all the courses: 2101 3103 4140 4141 4142 4143 4144

Some Reasons given sloppy referencing/plagiarism Did not know it was wrong First time that we are actually putting what we learned on plagiarism into practice Time pressure and I had to deliver Pressure to perform well and get good grades The author expressed exactly what I meant but in better language We worked as a group I didn’t mean to cheat I was unwell and my friend helped I knew it was wrong but… Self-plagiarism – what’s the problem – it is my own work!!

The Board of Examiners is not interested in policing or penalizing students !!
