Drama Terms Act: A division within a play, much like the chapters in a novel Scene: A division of an act into smaller parts Monologue: A long speech spoken by a character to himself, another character, or the audience

Drama terms Dialogue: A conversation between two or more characters Tragedy: A serious work of drama in which the hero suffers catastrophic or serious misfortune, usually because of his own actions

Comedy: depicts everyday life and common human failings Comedy: depicts everyday life and common human failings. It usually has a happy ending, since it used to be written to amuse the audience. Protagonist: Hero or leading characters with whom the audience identifies with

Antagonist: Person who opposes the protagonist’s wishes Theme: A central, unifying idea in a story or drama

Tragic Hero: A protagonist with a fatal flaw which eventually leads to his demise Dramatic Irony: When the audience or reader knows something that a characters in the story do not know

Exposition: The beginning section of a story or play that introduces the situation Foil: A character who is nearly opposite of another character, often the protagonist and antagonist

Iambic Pentameter: A line of poetry that contains 5 iambs of two syllables each
