What is this child doing? ”The solitary individual” A traditional perspective in developmental psychology: What is this child doing? (Barbara Rogoff 2003)

”Social influence” But what is the child doing?

”Cultural influence” What is the child doing?

”Transformation of participation perspective” The child is foregrounded, with information about him as an individual as the focus of analysis. At the same time, interpersonal and cultural-institutional is available in the background. A general sense of interpersonal and cultural-institutional information is necessary to understand what this child is doing

”Interpersonal focus of analysis” A focus on the relationship among the child and the peopel beside him. We would be interested in knowing that the three people are playing scrabble as a spelling activity organized by the adult

”A cultural-institutional focus of analysis” The details regarding the particular people and their relations with each other are backrounded.

”A cultural focus” …but leave out the equally important role of the people who constitute cultural activities This figure is equally difficult to understand as the first one
