Implementation of Trilingual Education System at school Aigerim Sary

Trilingual education system? Teaching and learning in three languages Being competent in three languages To ensure the competiveness of the country and its people

TES (Trilingual Education System) in Kazakhstan "In 2018-2019 we plan to introduce the teaching of history of Kazakhstan and a number of natural sciences (computer science, chemistry, biology, physics) in English in all schools. This transition requires a huge effort. First, it is necessary to change the content, and secondly, it is necessary to train the teaching staff for it and, of course, the general language training of our students must be at the highest level", - Balykbayev noticed.

Problems of TES implementation at schools Insufficient methodological and organizational support. School and university teachers who are to give integrated courses should be trained both in the language and in methods of teaching a foreign language as it is the only way to make a language integrated course effective. Shortage of teachers. Problem in designing and developing courses for trilingual education programs is in lack of precise requirements as to the skills and competencies a trilingual specialist should have on the completion of the education program Insufficient development of language skills in the native tongue. At the initial stage of language acquisition it is vital to properly develop phonetic skills, that is, phonemic hearing as well as connected with it word analysis and synthesis.

Being not competent in all three languages TES Pupils Teachers Being not competent in all three languages Lack of related teaching materials Variety of teaching methods Extra paper works Being not competent in all three languages Lack of awareness about of TES Other obligatory subjects and home works Low level of motivation

Solution: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) CLIL as “a dual-focused educational approach in which an additional language is used for the learning and teaching of both content and language” (Coyle et al., 2010, p.1) can become a solution for increasing and maintaining linguistic proficiency of Kazakhstani students in the three languages.

How does CLIL work? Foreign language is learnt and taught Subject content is learnt Mother tongue is not affected negatively

CLIL implementation Advantages Disadvantages Developing student multilingual interests and attitudes Access subject specific target language terminology The development of good practices through cooperation with teachers in other departments Advantages language teachers lack knowledge on the subjects while subject teacher have minimal knowledge of foreign languages the lack of materials Not all pupils are motivated to learn English Disadvantages

Possible ways of using TES in ELT classrooms CLIL: The list of terminology & list of uncommon words Vocabulary copybook with Kazakh and Russian translation Reading comprehension (retelling “swap languages”)
