What is Running Start? Running Start is a state-wide program that allows 11th and 12th grade students to take classes at community or technical colleges Tuition is paid by the Running Start Program Students earn both high school AND college credits A 5-credit college class is equal to a 1-credit high school class

Who is eligible? You must be in 11th or 12th grade while participating in the program You must place into college level English (English 101) through the College Success Assessment The Math Placement is dependent on the WAMAP Math Entrance Exams You must meet program application deadlines

What are ADVANTAGES of the program? Opportunity to take ADVANCED COURSEWORK ADULT educational setting FLEXIBILITY in scheduling classes Dual Credit (high school & college)

Periods attending at KWHS Available college credit per quarter Enrollment Options Full Time VS. Part Time Full-Time: A student may choose to attend Running Start full time. This schedule allows students to take up to 15 credits per quarter. Part-Time: A student may choose to attend Running Start part time. The number of classes the student takes at Kentwood dictates the number of credits available each quarter. If you haven’t yet COMPLETED Algebra 3-4, you will most likely need to be a Part-Time RS Student. Periods attending at KWHS Available college credit per quarter 15 1 2 12 3 10 4 6 5 +

IMPORTANT Considerations Maturity is essential Students pay for books, lab fees, etc. Transportation is the student’s responsibility College credit does not transfer to ALL colleges Student is starting his/her COLLEGE GPA and continuing with his/her high school GPA! Must maintain a 2.0 (“C” average) or you will be ineligible to continue in the program and could loose access to Financial Aid money.

IMPORTANT Considerations Students begin generating a permanent college transcript while continuing to add to current high school transcript Adult-learning environment May miss out on school activities, announcements, etc. The college academic schedule (quarters) doesn’t line up with the high school academic schedule (semesters) You’ll need to plan on a full-year commitment

What makes a SUCCESSFUL Running Start Student? Independent work ability Attend your classes Maturity Self-motivated/EXCELLENT study habits Previous academic success An interest in a program of study that isn’t taught at the high school

What should your parents know? Most Running Start students see their GPA DROP when they take classes at the college Parents will not have access to instructors, progress reports, attendance, etc. Students are still responsible for meeting all Kent School District grad requirements Students still need to complete a High School and Beyond Plan - Running Start students just have to complete this independently

Where do Kentwood Running Start students go? Most Kentwood students choose Green River College: http://www.greenriver.edu/academics/running-start.htm Some choose Highline College: https://www.highline.edu/get-started/quick-start-guides/running-start But any community/technical college your student has transportation to is a possibility

Meeting With Your Kentwood Counselor Make an appointment with your Kentwood School Counselor to have your Running Start Verification Form signed Contact Mrs. Scott, Counseling Secretary, to schedule this appointment or during our Counselor Designated times. No drop ins! Bring the following to your appointment: College Success Assessment results Verification Form with “Student” section completed Running Start Agreement form signed by you and your parent

Registering for Classes Each Quarter Schedule an appointment with your School Counselor to get your RS Verification Form signed every quarter Contact Mrs. Scott, Counseling Secretary to schedule this appointment Bring a RS verification form with “Student” portion completed and an idea of which classes you would like to take

Expectations The Community Colleges & Kentwood High School communicate important and time sensitive information about course registration and graduation requirements regularly with students through email and website updates. Running Start students are expected to read all emails and respond accordingly Running Start students are expected to be responsible for managing time, appointments and paperwork
