Formal Assessment: analyzing student responses to the lab questions Objectives: Today I will be able to: Explore the interactions between milk and food coloring when detergent is added. Review the steps to the scientific method by completing a lab Informal Assessment: Monitoring student interactions as they complete the milk lab Formal Assessment: analyzing student responses to the lab questions Common Core Connection Value Evidence Reason abstractly and quantitatively

Lesson Sequence Warm-Up Milk Lab Safety Milk Lab Exit Ticket

Warm - Up Find your assigned seat! What is one fun thing you did this summer? What is one thing that you are looking forward to in chemistry GT this year? Chemistry - Investigation of what matter is composed of, the chemical composition

Objective: Today I will be able to: Explore the interactions between milk and food coloring when detergent is added.

Homework: Enjoy your first day back!

Agenda: Warm – Up Cat’s Meow Lab Exit Ticket

Milk Lab Scientific Method Review (Groups based on famous movie/cartoon duos) Icebreaker questions Would you rather sing karaoke every time you eat something or sneeze every time you sit down? Would you rather have free Starbucks for a year or a bowl with never ending ice cream?

Brainstorm What are the steps to the scientific method?

Milk Lab - Safety Wear goggles and aprons Be careful not to spill milk or food coloring on yourself The food coloring WILL stain

How does it work? What macromolecules are found in whole milk? (Hint: look at the nutrition label if you do not know). Why did the detergent break the surface tension, but the food dye did not?

Closure: How does this lab relate to the scientific method?
