CANADIAN PROVIDENCES

Geography and Climate of Canada Canadian climate and geography vary from region to region, and the weather changes throughout the year. Canada has the world’s longest coastline. Much of Canada is not farmable, but some southern regions are very productive. Discuss: How would varying climate and geography affect the development of cuisine? What impact would a lengthy coastline have on a country’s food customs? Why would the presence of productive farmland influence a country’s food habits?

Canadian Culture Canada is a multicultural society. Grains, fruits, potatoes, dairy products, livestock, and fish are significant economic products. Holiday celebrations, harvest festivals, and family gatherings are important Canadian occasions. Discuss: What is the cultural background of the majority of Canadians? What role do agricultural products play in a country’s cuisine? What types of foods are often served at holiday celebrations and other social occasions in Canada? What type of cuisine is likely to develop in a multicultural society?

Canadian Cuisine Dishes contributed by immigrants include Yorkshire pudding, Hollandaise sauce, and dandelion salad. Spiced beef, roasted turkey, and smoked ham are popular main dishes in Canada. Canadians turn apples, berries, and other fruits into pies and preserves. Discuss: What immigrant groups contributed the dishes mentioned here? What are some examples of everyday main dishes served in Canada? What types of berries and tree fruits are grown in Canada?

Canadian Cuisine Canadians enjoy a variety of vegetables in soups, salads, and side dishes. Pasta is not part of classic Canadian cuisine, but bread products are part of most meals. Cheeses are produced throughout the country, and dairy products are used as ingredients in many recipes. Discuss: What are some examples of vegetables used in Canadian cuisine? What grain product is served as a Canadian side dish or in stuffing? How are dairy products used in Canadian recipes?
