GROUP QUESTION Why is it that some schools tend to struggle with accomplishing their mission, while others thrive? An organization achieves success in its goals and excellence in its operations not by good fortune or hard work, but by focused effort on the right things.

STUCK IN THE KNOW KNOW DO

SYMPTOMS - STUCK IN THE KNOW Mistrust and the low sharing of timely and useful information (i.e., information is not distributed beyond the leadership team). Low receptivity to effortful change (i.e., even when its obviously beneficial). More talk than action, then misaligned action (i.e., failure to integrate silos). Mechanistic action (i.e., under high pressures, people become creatures of habit rather than take risks). Complacency (i.e., people believe status quo is good enough)

Clarify… “Why” are you here? CRITICAL STEP #1 Clarify… “Why” are you here? An organization achieves success in its goals and excellence in its operations not by good fortune or hard work, but by focused effort on the right things.

WHY ARE YOU HERE? High Self Low High Others

WHY ARE YOU HERE? High Self HERE FOR THE “RIDE” Low High Others

WHY ARE YOU HERE? Self Others High Low High HERE FOR THE “ME” HERE FOR THE “RIDE” Low High Others

WHY ARE YOU HERE? Self Others High Low High HERE FOR THE “ME” HERE FOR THE “RIDE” HERE FOR THE “YOU” Low High Others

WHY ARE YOU HERE? Self Others High Low High HERE FOR “US” HERE FOR “ME” HERE FOR “US” Self HERE FOR “THE RIDE” HERE FOR “YOU” Low High Others

Nurture an Empowered Environment CRITICAL STEP #2 Nurture an Empowered Environment An organization achieves success in its goals and excellence in its operations not by good fortune or hard work, but by focused effort on the right things.

PATHWAY TO AN EMPOWERED FUTURE DISRUPT, CHALLENGE, CORRECT, AFFIRM, SUPPORT Unconscious Competence Conscious Competence Conscious Incompetence Unconscious Incompetence

NURTURING AN EMPOWERED ENVIRONMENT Act as a role model. Be transparent about your need to grow and develop. Reinforce the value of learning. Talk with your teammate about what they want to accomplish and what they feel the gaps are. Celebrate! Build processes to support development. Onboarding. Ongoing training. Mentoring. Reinforce shared values. Take time to discuss and acknowledge how the team’s work aligns back to our core values. Leverage problems as opportunities. Create stretch assignments, where team members can take risks without feeling that failure will result in job loss or negative consequences.

Have a Measured Plan for CRITICAL STEP #3 Have a Measured Plan for Executing Strategy An organization achieves success in its goals and excellence in its operations not by good fortune or hard work, but by focused effort on the right things.

TRANSLATING MISSION INTO STRATEGIC OUTCOMES Core Values Vision Strategy Balanced Scorecard Strategic Initiatives Personal Objectives STRATEGIC OUTCOMES

3A - HAVE A BALANCED STRATEGY To achieve our mission, how must we appear to our students and families? If we succeed, what will our organization look like to our students and families? To satisfy our students and families, what processes are needed for us to excel? To achieve our mission, how must our school grow and improve to meet the needs of our students and families? Learning & Growth Processes Stakeholders Financials/ Investments MISSION

3B - THINK STRATEGICALLY (PARALLEL THINKING)

3C - USE LEADING/LAGGING METRICS S.M.A.R.T. Priority Goal: Over the next 90 days, I will lose 15 pounds by exercising 30 minutes a day. Lagging (Summative) Measuring Weight (Scale Score) Leading (Predictive) Tracking Exercise (Minutes)

POSSIBLE MEASURES (METRICS) Number of defects, mistakes, rework, complaints Quality On time delivery as defined by the customer Timeliness Response time, number of tasks completed on schedule Cycle Time Number of requests handled, number of claims processed, percentages, financials Quantity Cost per person, cost per item/unit Cost Percent of favorable responses on surveys Customer Satisfaction

Relational Health determines school performance. A CRITICAL ASSUMPTION An organization achieves success in its goals and excellence in its operations not by good fortune or hard work, but by focused effort on the right things. Relational Health determines school performance.

3. Evaluate your performance. Adopt an “energizing” mindset – HOW TO AVOID THE TOXIC TRIANGLE 1. Assume good intent. 2. Make good decisions. 3. Evaluate your performance. Adopt an “energizing” mindset – “Even though I don’t feel valued, I will demonstrate respect.
