Title Ugandan Non-Communicable Diseases and Aging Cohort Study (NCT 02445079) Brief Synopsis/Aims Longitudinal observational cohort study, modeled after the WIHS and MACS studies in the United States with overarching aim to understand how HIV infection impacts aging in sub-Saharan Africa and to discern mechanisms of morbidity including inflammation and locally relevant exposures (CO, parasitic infections, etc) Design Longitudinal, observational cohort study Status Active, enrolling and observing participants Location(s) Mbarara, Uganda Sample Size ~300 currently active participants; goal enrollment 500-600 Participants Older-age (median 52 years), evenly divided into HIV+ (on ART minimum 3 years) and age- and gender-matched HIV-uninfected comparators enrolled from villages in the clinic catchment area Time Points Observed annually. Currently in year 3 of data collection, out of 4-8 years planned

Title Ugandan Non-Communicable Diseases and Aging Cohort Study (NCT 02445079) Primary Measures Cardiovascular: carotid ultrasonography, electrocardiogram, ankle-branchial index, blood pressure Pulmonary: pulmonary function testing (Crystal North, David Christiani) Metabolic: fasting blood glucose, fasting lipid profile, hemoglobin A1c, BMI, ankle-brachial index Inflammatory: stool for microbiome analysis (Doug Kwon), stool ova and parasite testing, inflammatory markers (sCD163, sCD14, IL6, FABP ,etc) Other: Environmental monitoring (CO, Crystal North), past medical hx, fam hx, HIV treatment and laboratory hx Planned: Geriatric measures including frailty, physical function, quality of life Requested Areas for Collaboration Electrophysiology partnership for EKG interpretation and publication Geriatrics partnership for addition of aging specific measures Neurology partnership for neurocognitive functioning measurement Funding National Institutes of Health (R21 HL124712) Harvard Center for AIDS Research (5P30AI060354); MGH ECOR
