LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS LESSON Know that Anglo American is a global leader in the mining and natural resources sector. Appreciate that natural capital can be used to develop social and human capital. Know that Anglo American is a socially responsible company.

INTRODUCTION Anglo American is a worldwide mining company. In some cases - such as Anglo's forestry business - these can be renewed. In mining, this is not the case. Anglo American tries to make sure that it's mining is sustainable. Sustainability is about replacing what has been taken out.

HELPING POORER COUNTRIES Poorer countries supply a high proportion of resources. Wealth from mining can help poorer countries to improve health and education. Many firms have a duty to help poorer countries to develop.

RESPONSIBILITY TO STAKEHOLDERS Stakeholders are any group that is affected by or has a stake in a business. Anglo American thinks all groups, not just shareholders, are important. Grouping a long term business it believes that it best serves its shareholders by also showing consideration to other stakeholders.

GOOD CITIZENSIP Anglo American recognises that its reputation is determined by the quality its relationships. The communities with which the Company is concerned range from people living next door to a paper mill to anyone living alongside a road used by the company's vehicles. Managing these is a key part of building a strong reputation and being a good corporate citizen.

CONCLUSION Anglo American requires all its operations to have Community Engagement Plans. Anglo American makes mining sustainable by adding to social capital in areas where it works. Anglo American also seeks to ensure that its environmental impacts are carefully controlled.
