I want to achieve … Level 4 Writing

You should already be showing Level 3 skills … Level 3 Skills Writing in proper sentences Expressing your opinions Using good spelling

Level 4 Writing … Pupils write individual paragraphs of about three or four simple sentences, drawing largely on memorised language. They are beginning to use their knowledge of grammar to adapt and substitute individual words and set phrases. They are beginning to use dictionaries or glossaries to check words they have learnt. In addition to Level 3 skills, you will need … Paragraphs! Memorized vocabulary Using your knowledge of grammar

Top Tips for getting a Level 4 …

1. Write in paragraphs Just like in English, group together sentences on the same topic. For example, if you were asked to write about your family, you could do a paragraph on each family member. Here is an example of a Level 4 paragraph about your brother: Mon frère sappelle James. Il a 10 ans. Il est petit, avec les cheveux blonds et les yeux bruns. Jaime James parce quil est marrant, et jadore jouer au foot avec mon frère.

Joining Paragraphs … Think about how you relate one paragraph to another in English. You probably use words such as: First of all … And then … On the other hand … However … Finally … T r y d o i n g t h i s i n F r e n c h ! C l i c k t o f i n d o u t h o w …

Dabord, je me lève à 7h30. Puis, je me douche et je prends le petit déjeuner. Ensuite, je vais au collège – jarrive à 8h45. Je prends le bus. Jadore les maths et la biologie. Par contre, je déteste langlais, parce que cest difficile. Finalement, je me couche à 22h30. Cependant, le weekend je me couche à 23h30. Dabord first of all Puis and then Ensuite and then Par contre on the other hand Finalement finally Cependant however

2. Memorized vocabulary For Level 4, you need to remember a wide range of vocabulary. You also need to remember how to spell it accurately. For example, if you were asked to write about your daily routine, you would need to remember lots of French phrases such as: -I get up -I have a shower -I go to school -I eat lunch -I come home -I go to bed You must also remember how to spell them properly – including accents! See the link entitled How to get 10/10 on vocabulary tests for advice on how to memorize vocabulary.

3. Using your knowledge of grammar For Level 4, your teacher will want to see evidence that you know about grammar (how words fit together correctly in sentences.) Study the grammar section of the Key Stage 3 website carefully. Look especially at: -Using negatives -Using verbs -Using adjectives -Using quantifiers

Summary To get a Level 4, you need to do everything listed under Level 3 PLUS: 1.Write in extended paragraphs 2.Use memorized language – so work hard at vocabulary tests! 3.Show knowledge of grammatical rules
