Presentation transcript:

Welcome to Women’s Lacrosse Fouls Note to trainer: When you give an example of a foul or violation, give the simplest example and not all the exceptions and alternate situations that may occur. (we will get to those when they grasp the simplest occurrence) Note to trainer: If the group is “more experienced” – you may want to include some of the more ‘involved’ applications. Welcome to Women’s Lacrosse Fouls

Types of Fouls Major Fouls Minor Fouls Goal Circle Fouls Team Fouls Misconduct Fouls Worksheet: Foul chart and Penalty Administration

Fouls by both Defense and Attack Major Fouls Jeopardize the SAFETY of the game or threaten the “Spirit of the Game” Misconduct Suspension Fouls Fouls by the Attack Fouls by the Defense Fouls by both Defense and Attack

Fouls by the Defense Handout: Rule Reference Using the Crosse: Checking dangerously Check to the head Crosse in/through the sphere Cross-check/illegal contact Slash Dangerous contact Using the Body Block Obstruction of Free Space to Goal 3 seconds Hold/push Handout and Use the Rule reference sheet to help with the definition and type of fouls. Handout: Rule Reference

Dangerous Use of the Crosse Slash: Reckless, dangerous swing of the crosse at opponent’s body or crosse, regardless of contact Dangerous Contact: any action that thrusts or shoves any player with or without the ball who is in a defenseless position. This includes but is not limited to: head down, from out of the visual field, in the air, or out of balance Illegal Contact: contact with opponent’s body with the stick held in a horizontal position Crosse in/Through the Sphere: Reaching crosse into or through an opponent’s sphere, poking or waving crosse near opponent’s face/head Checking : Rough or Recklessly check, may not be toward the body or contact the body Refer to pages of definitions in Rule Book (rule 6, rule 8) and Rule Reference Handout if candidate do not have rule books.

CHECK THROUGH THE SPHERE A player may not reach into or through the sphere or hold her crosse around the throat of her opponent. (nor poke or wave in the face.) Check through the Sphere

Cross Check Using the shaft of the stick to hit, push or displace the opponent

Illegal contact Defender drops head of stick to a horizontal position and extends into the body of the offensive player

Illegal Use of Body/Space Three Seconds: defending in the 8 meter arc without marking an opponent within a stick’s length Obstruction of Free Space to Goal: block or guard the space between the ball and the goal circle Push/Hold: Pushing or holding, detaining, or restraining an opponent with one’s body or stick Block: moving into the path of an opponent, without giving her time or space to stop or change direction Find these fouls on the rule reference: understand the definitions. Demo the Block and ‘time and space’.

Holding Defender uses her crosse to detain player from Do we use detaining anymore? Defender uses her crosse to detain player from continuing on her established path

Dangerous Follow Through Fouls by the Attack Fouls with the Crosse Dangerous Follow Through Dangerous Propel Forcing Through Illegal Cradle Fouls with the Body Charge Illegal Pick Attack fouls need to be recognized more often. There is an emphasis on attack fouls at the start of each season.

Fouls with the Crosse/Ball Dangerous Shot: shoot dangerously or without control at the goalkeeper – Illegal Cradle: Hold or carry the ball in the sphere when defense or opponent is in legal position to check Forcing Through: While in possession of the ball try to force the crosse through two opposing crosses Dangerous Propel: Shoot, pass, throw, bat, flick the ball ( propel) in a dangerous/uncontrolled manner Dangerous Follow Through: Follow through with the crosse in a dangerous or uncontrolled manner at any time Again : Ask the students to reference the book or rule reference sheet and tell you which are automatic yellow cards. Demonstrate the illegal cradle situation.

Fouls with the Body Illegal pick Charge while in possession of the ball, charge, barge, back into a defender that has established a legal position Illegal pick without possession of the ball, set a moving or stationary pick out of the visual field of an opposing player which does not allow time or space for the opponent to change direction and contact occurs What is the visual field. And what is an illegal pick and what is dangerous contact on an illegal pick?

Charge Offense has space to change direction Defense established Here is ‘time and distance’ Offense has space to change direction Defense established

Defender maintained space Offensive player went into her space

CHARGE Defender was established and the attacker initiated the contact.

Illegal Cradle Legal defensive position

Illegal Cradle Both defenders -legal defensive position Player pulls crosse into her own sphere Usually happens when the ball carrier is double/tripled teamed

Fouls by both the Attack and Defense False Start– movement to gain advantage before whistle Holding or Detaining – contact using body or crosse to keep opponent from moving Crosse in the Sphere Offsides and Early Entry Go thru these and have the class respond with ‘major’ or ‘ minor’.

Misconduct/Suspension Fouls Must be Carded Check to the Head Slash Dangerous Propel Dangerous Follow Through Dangerous Contact to a Defenseless Player Unsportsmanlike Conduct - Verbal or Physical The 5 yellow are mandatory.. The lighter one is discretionary but strongly encouraged.

Slash Reckless or dangerous swing of the crosse at an opponent’s crosse or body (contact is not necessary) Defender out of position for a legal check hands together on bottom of stick

Check to the Head No player’s crosse may hit or cause an opponents crosse to hit the opponent’s head.

Illegal equipment or uniform Minor Fouls Illegal equipment or uniform Procedure errors Misplays Note: Minor fouls usually are not dangerous.

Illegal Uniform or Equipment Illegal Crosse Jewelry Illegal Uniform Give some simple examples of each. (big pocket in stick, erring, no number)

Procedural Errors Illegal Substitution Delay of Game Request for a 3rd stick check that meets specs Request for a 3rd time out

Misplays Cover Empty Stick Check Play without a stick Illegal Draw Warding off Play from out of bounds Score with illegal stick The next slides will show most of these. Move on to the next slides

Cover A player may not guard a ground ball with crosse or foot Each player is entitled an equal opportunity to play the ball

EMPTY STICK CHECK A player may not Check or impede an opponents crosse when her crosse is not in contact with the ball. Each player is entitled an equal opportunity to play the ball without illegal interference

ILLEGAL DRAW A player taking the draw may not move too soon, not go up, ball not above head, cross over the circle or retraining line too soon. White is the ‘language of the rule’ First motion for the DRAW must be UP

WARDING A player may not guard the crosse with an arm Defender is in a legal position and the offensive player uses her arm to guard the crosse

Playing from out of Bounds Take an active part in the game when her foot/feet are out of bounds Player (Red) went Out of BOUNDS to gain a position to make a play on the ball

Goal Circle Fouls – by the Defense Field player Runs through Reaches in Goalkeeper Standing outside reaches in Walks back in with the ball Does not clear the ball within 10 sec Deputy Enters without team’s possession Enters while the goalie is still in circle Next slides show a few of these

Goalie Play If the Goalie goes out to play ball… Then Goalie can not immediately step back into circle. She is considered out of the circle.

Goal Circle Play Once Goalie is out of circle she can not reach into circle to regain the ball

10Goalie has 10 seconds to “clear” The goal circle is a cylinder. Goalie can throw ball or carry ball out of their circle. Opposing players are not allowed to enter or break plane of the circle to defend Goalie.

Goal Circle Fouls – by the Offense Field player Runs through Reaches in Defensive player breaks the cylinder

Team Fouls AKA – Offsides - A team must not have more than seven players below the restraining line in their offensive end, and must not have more than eight players below the restraining line in their defensive end. If there are 7 in the attacking end there must 4 plus a GK (or not) behind the RL.

Team Fouls Offside called on offense or defense “Hint”: To see if offside occurs, check to see if there are less than 4 offensive players and/or less than 4 defensive field players + GK behind the restraining line.  If there are 7 in the attacking end there must be how many behind the RL?  What if there are 7 in the attacking end, 5 behind the RL and one GK? What is wrong here? Q/A: see notes

Team Fouls Early entry off the draw: offense or defense X X O O O X X If a player moves over the restraining line prior to possession being declared giving her team 4 players between the restraining lines, early entry is called.  The ball is given to the non-offending team at the center draw line.  The official should select the closest two players to the center draw line: one attack and one defender.  The attack player is given the ball on the draw line.  The defender is placed at a 45°angle to one side.   Q/A: see notes

Misconduct fouls All of the misconducts may be carded. Excessive rough, dangerous or unsportsmanlike play Persistent or flagrant violation of the rules Deliberate endangering the safety of an opposing player Baiting or taunting which is intended or designed to embarrass, ridicule or demean others All of the misconducts may be carded.

See it, Recognize it, Call it Participants form small groups. Clinician calls out the name of a foul. The group discusses the foul and decides if it is a major or minor foul. Add the foul signal for each foul. You can make teams and keep score.? You can use flash cards.  Activity: see notes
