Copy onto 1R: Prompt Prompt: In Animal Farm there is a clear hierarchy (distribution) of power; the pigs are on top and everyone else is below. Analyze the role education plays in the lives of the animals. Discuss this hierarchy of power and how it contributes to Orwell’s message about education.

Discuss Take five minutes to discuss the prompt and what it means to you. How will you answer this question? What textual evidence can you use? What is Orwell’s message about education?

Let’s break the prompt down into three parts Please jot down three things you will need to discuss in this essay.

Thesis statement sample In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead Tim has to overcome a power struggle between his father and Sam that ultimately leads to his coming of age. What do you notice is included in this thesis statement? What do you think the first two body paragraphs will be about? What about the third body paragraph?

Thesis statements: Copy onto 1r cont’d Thesis statements must be clear, concise and contain the three main points of your body paragraphs They must answer EACH part of the prompt They are always the last sentence in the introduction paragraph

Outline for thesis/graphic organizer In the novel _______, there is a clear hierarchy of power where (describe this hierarchy) based on the (describe the education of the animals) this shows that Orwell believes ___________. You can create a thesis different from the outline, however it must answer all parts of the prompt. You have 25mins to create your thesis and to find three pieces of textual evidence to support your main points.

Introduction paragraph In order to fight a war for freedom sometimes you need to overcome your own family. In the historical fiction novel My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier, Tim is a young boy dealing with a deadly war and family angst. His older brother Sam wants to go off to fight and yet his father believes the war is a pointless and risky event. In this novel Tim has to overcome a power struggle between his father and Sam that ultimately leads to his coming of age. Answer: What do you notice is in this introduction?

Copy onto 2R The introduction must include the following: A hook (not a question) a. quote b. description of an event or setting c. shocking fact or statement d. a commonly held belief or idea TAG: Title, author (George Orwell), genre (fictional allegory) Background information on the book that relates to your thesis!!! Thesis

Writing time You have 25mins to write your introduction paragraph! When you finish please raise your hand so I can give you a stamp for credit SAMPLE INTRO: In order to fight a war for freedom sometimes you need to overcome your own family.

Body Paragraphs: 3R Thesis: In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead Tim has to overcome a power struggle between his father and Sam that ultimately leads to his coming of age. Based on my thesis, what is my first body paragraph about? What must my topic sentence include?

Sample Body Paragraph #1 Based on my thesis I know the first paragraph needs to give information about the power struggle between father and Sam! Label each part of my body paragraph (A) Father and Sam constantly argue over whether or not to fight in the war. (B) For example, when Sam comes home from fighting father says, (C)“Sam I am sick of treason in my household” (Collier, 22). (D)Father has always been against the war and believes to fight in this war is to go against the King of England. Sam disagrees and wants to defend his country. (E)This leaves Tim torn between both Sam and his father. What do you notice about B and C? What do you notice about D? Based on the last sentence, what is my second body paragraph going to be about? (Think-pair-share) How does this connect back to my thesis?

Response to Literature Body Paragraphs All body paragraphs must include 1. Topic sentence: a sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph is about 2. Introduction to textual evidence: small background information on what is going on before the evidence 3. Textual evidence correctly cted using MLA format (the quote) 4. Explanation of evidence: Why is this evidence so important? How does it relate to your thesis? 5. Transition: Introduce the reader to what you will focus on in your next paragraph

Body #1 Use your thesis and the sample I have given you to write body paragraph #1. You have 25mins to write

Body Paragraphs Cont’d Based on my thesis and my transition sentence from body number 1 what is my second body paragraph going to be about? Thesis: In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead Tim has to overcome a power struggle between his father and Sam that ultimately leads to his coming of age. Body #1: Father and Sam constantly argue over whether or not to fight in the war. For example, when Sam comes home from fighting father says, “Sam I am sick of treason in my household” (Collier, 22). Father has always been against the war and believes to fight in this war is to go against the King of England. Sam disagrees and wants to defend his country. This leaves Tim torn between both Sam and his father.

Body #2 Sample Tim has to make a life altering decision about being on his father’s side or on his brother’s. For instance, when father and Sam are fighting Tim finds himself in the middle, “Tim, why are you refusing to choose a side?” (Collier, 87). This shows that Tim must decide his loyalty to his brother or to his father. It is no longer possible for Tim to stay undecided and the choice he makes will change his life forever. Tim’s decision ultimately leads to his coming of age. Based on my transition sentence, what is my third paragraph about? How does this connect back to my thesis?

Review: Body paragraphs 1.

Body #2 You have 25mins to use your thesis and the text to write body paragraph #2

Body #3 Based on your thesis statement, what must the third body paragraph be about? Think-Pair-Share How will you transition to the conclusion?

Conclusion Please identify what is included in the sample conclusion. It is clear that Tim’s family situation forced him to make a decision that caused him to come of age. Sam and his father’s constant arguing tore the family apart. Eventually Tim went on the side of his father and chose to remain away from the war and to help his family instead. His loyalty to his family ultimately caused him to become a responsible adult. Many people are faced with decisions that will greatly impact their lives. It is important to think about the outcomes of your choices and how it will effect your future.

Conclusion: 6R Conclusion must include: 1. Restate your thesis in different words! 2. Summarize your main points and explain why they are important 3. Give a final thought and connect it to the world
