7.1 Billion! How BIG is a billion? If you live to be 1 million seconds you’d be 11.6 days old. If you live to be 1 billion seconds you’d be 31.7 years old. If you had 1 million $ in $1000 bills the stack would be 6.3 inches high If you had 1 billion $ in $1000 bills the stack would be 357 feet high.

World Population The world’s population reached 1 billion in the early 1800s By 1930 it doubled to 2 billion, by 1975 it doubled to 4 billion. In 1999 the population reached 6 billion In 2011, it reached 7 billion.

Population Growth Birth Rate- # of live births per 1000 people highest- Niger 46.84 lowest- Monaco-6.79 US is 147nd with 13.66 Fertility Rate- Average # of children a woman of childbearing years would have in her lifetime 2.1 is needed to replace the population Worldwide Average- 3.0 highest- Niger 7.03 lowest- Singapore .79 US is 121th with 2.06

Mortality Rate (Death Rate)- # of deaths per 1000 people highest- South Africa 17.3 lowest- Qatar 1.54 US is 88th with 8.39 Infant Mortality Rate- # of deaths among babies under age one per 1000 live births highest- Afghanistan 119.4 lowest- Monaco 1.81 US ranks 174h with 5.9 Rate of Natural Increase- birth rate minus death rate Growth Rate- The average annual percent change in the population, resulting from a surplus (or deficit) of births over deaths and the balance of migrants entering and leaving a country. US - .9% (124th)

Population Distribution Population is NOT evenly distributed Climate, altitude, water access, and political/economic situation influence where people live. 90% of the pop. lives in the Northern Hemisphere. 66% of the pop. lives between 20ºN and 60ºN The least densely populated areas are polar, desert, and mountainous regions.

Migration Migration- movement of people Immigration- people moving Into a country Emigration- people Exiting a country The PUSH-PULL FACTORS- reasons for migration Push- those reasons that cause people to leave their country such as natural disasters, war, persecution, or environmental. Pull- those reasons that attract people to another country such as economic opportunity, better technology, or better climate.

Urban Geography About ½ of the world’s pop lives in cities. 250+ million people live in megacities- cities with 8+ million Characteristics of a city center of business and/or culture suburbs- built up areas around the city exurbs- smaller cities near the larger city metropolitan area- the city, its suburbs, and exurbs megalopolis- an area in which several large cities have grown together such as Washington D.C. to Boston.
