Introducing The Leap This video highlights everything necessary to know about Leap Motion. It shows how it works for multiple types of software, differentiates fingers from thumbs and other devices such as pens (chopsticks shown), and is incredibly precise. It also shows what it looks like, the size, and what type of motions are typically used to control it.

What Is The Leap? iPod sized USB peripheral “It’s more accurate than a mouse, as reliable as a keyboard, and more sensitive than a touchscreen” (Leap Motion, 2012). iPod sized USB peripheral Creates a 3D interaction space of 8 cubic feet to precisely control software on a computer The Leap is defined as a USB peripheral (and a peripheral in computer terms is something that hooks up to the CPU such as a monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.). It’s small like an ipod, and creates a 8 cubit feet 3D interaction space that can distinguish what’s controlling it (such as fingers or a pen) in order to control programs associated with the device. It also has customizable features such as changing what gestures control, and having the ability to hook up multiple Leaps to one computer in order to created a larger interaction space. Distinguishes thumbs from fingers to pencils Can create custom gestures Network more than one Leap device

How Does The Leap Work? Can track movements down to a 1/100th of a millimeter It’s 200x more sensitive than existing touch-free products & technologies The Leap senses hand and finger movements independently, as well as items The Leap is so precise that it can track movements down to 1/100th of a millimeter. This means that it is 200 times more sensitive than existing touch-free products and technologies such as the Kinect, which can sense motion and movement in a larger whole. The precision of this device can tell the difference between each finger and knows which is which, and it can sense the difference between a hand and a pencil.

Easy As 1, 2, 3! 1. Plug it in 2. Load it up Enjoy! 3. Calibrate it Leap Motion is not only unique and advanced technology but it also is simple for users. All you have it do is plug it into your USB drive, load the software, calibrate it by the wave of a hand and enjoy! 3. Calibrate it

Retail Information Priced at $69.99 Specifications TBD Besides being an outstanding device, it’s also decently priced! For being able to outstandingly exceed products such as the Kinect, $70 isn’t a bad price. Currently they’re available for pre-order through their website and are expected to be released in early 2013. At the moment they have not released their specs. Priced at $69.99 Specifications TBD A limited number are currently available for pre-order at LeapMotion.com

Development Developers can receive FREE kits and so far Leap Motion has distributed thousands LabView Hacker got a Leap wirelessly hooked up to and controlling the movement of a quadcopter in under 24 hours. They were able to tilt and move a hand over the Leap to make the quadcopter adjust itself to match, and feedback was almost instant, and quite accurate. Since Leap Motion wants their software to work with as many programs as possible, they’ve allowed developers to apply for free Leap kits and so far they’ve released thousands. One company called LabView Hacker had 130 of their developers try to come up with the coolest thing possible within 24 hours of receiving their kits and one developer was able to connect the Leap to a quadcopter. A quadcopter is remote controlled device that flies by hovering using 4 propellers. It was controlled using a hand tilting left and right or up and down. Not only was the response accurate but it was almost instant.

How It Will Impact The World Artists and creative types can use The Leap to emulate a stylus or easily create 3D img. Anyone can use The Leap to interact with Windows 7/8 or Mac OS X by clicking, grabbing, scrolling and using familiar gestures like pinch to zoom in 3D space. Engineers can interact more easily with 3D modeling software. Gamers can play more easily and many will modify with Leap in mind. Surgeons can control 3D medical data with their hands without taking off their gloves. There are so many different ways that Leap Motion can be used that it has obvious potential to impact the world. Behind The Leap The initial technology breakthrough came from co-founder and CTO David Holz. David was working on a PhD in mathematics from UNC Chapel Hill and left to pursue Leap Motion. Before that, he was conducting research for NASA on fluid mechanics. The initial technology breakthrough came from co-founder and CTO David Holz.
