Conductors, Insulators, Specific Heat, & Thermal Expansion Definitions for Notebook
Copy These Definitions in Notebook: (Entry 40) Conductor – A material that allows heat to transfer through it easily Example: Metals 2. Insulator – A material that does not allow heat to transfer through it easily Example: Styrofoam or Wool
Specific Heat: When an object is heated, its temperature will rise. Temperatures do not increase at the same rate for all objects Some objects require more Heat Energy to raise the temperature by the same amount. The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a material by 1 Kelvin is called specific heat. Ex: Sand and Water
Thermal Expansion: the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature. When heated, the particles of matter speed up. As they speed up, the particles spread out. The expanding of matter when it is heated is called Thermal Expansion
