Telling the Research Story… Emily Asch Head of Technical Services St. Catherine University Library ejasch@stkate.edu Library Technology Conference 2012

St. kate’s story Private, Catholic University Undergraduate College for Women 5,300 students 3,800 undergraduate, 1,500 graduate 261 faculty Associate, Bachelor, Masters, and Doctoral Degrees Part of 8 library consortium (CLIC)

Digital Commons Berkley Electronic Press hosted institutional repository solution Simple but robust structure Series (group of documents) Galleries (for a more visual/gallery presentation) Events & Conferences Journals Customizable Comes with very own support person!

Sophia: An e-community of scholarship and creativity St. Kate’s institutional repository Faculty & Student Research Visibility Graduate research projects & papers Senior Honors Papers Oral history project Art exhibit by faculty member Video of faculty annual lecture

What we were trying to do Create a showcase of for our faculty-student collaborative research while focusing on the people and the experience Office of Research and sponsored programs approached me about finding a venue to showcase the faculty/student collaborative research that happens at St. Kate’s This showcase would be on the students and their experience, as well as the faculty…

What we had Digital Commons Student interviews Student pictures We knew we wanted to use this Student interviews Student pictures Faculty pictures Out of the box thinking

What we DID not have Final research product An obvious structure for this

Series structure Series data fields: Data to go in: Title Author Abstract Description of research Full-text of research Data to go in: Student name Faculty name Student interview (text) Student picture Title of project

Series

GALLERIES? Gallery view of objects Pictures Creative works Just completed one Could the data fields work for what we wanted? It used graphics for the primary information point

Galleries? Gallery data fields Data to go in: Graphic Name/title of graphic Creator name Description field Date of creation Data to go in: Student picture Student name Faculty name Student interview (text) Title of project ? ? ? ?

GALLERIES!!!!

With Galleries We Could: Have image be primary point of information Present them as a slide show Keep them viewable all at once (as a gallery, so to speak) ;-) Focus on the student Put dates and names Add some other information Interview text could be description We were on a roll…

With Galleries Could we: Alter and/or add some open text fields? Create a parallel faculty gallery? Create links to a particular faculty page? Add HTML links to open text fields? Add audio/video? What if we did have the finished project/research?

bePress support to the rescue I had some knowledge / experience of adding fields Asked my support rep about what exactly we could do (this happened a lot!) And as always they came through and made the changes we needed!

How it came together Title Research project description Collaborators names (students & faculty) Project title Picture Year Experience (interview text) Included link when possible to the research project

Making the connections Student Collaborator Faculty Collaborator Research Project

Where we ended up Graphical presentation Focus on the people and the experience Links from anywhere to everywhere The cyclical and linked nature of research The story of research…

The student research experience
