Starter: My Food Chain!? Task: 2 MINS List 3 different types of food that you ate yesterday?… Now list what else may eat that food?.. Now list what else may eat that as food?!!...

My Ecosystem Definition: WORD FILL TASK: 3 MINS An ecosystem is a of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in conjunction with the components of their environment (things like air, water and mineral soil), interacting as a . community, system, nonliving, My more simplified definition!... A community of interacting and their physical . environment, biological, organisms,

My Ecosystem Definition: WORD FILL TASK: 2 MINS An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment (things like air, water and mineral soil), interacting as a system. My more simplified definition!... A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. What is an Ecosystem Food Web? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvZlooi5_kE

“A Food Web is a network of many food chains in an ecosystem” LO1: Identify components that make up an ecosystem – E/D/C “A Food Web is a network of many food chains in an ecosystem” The base “Non-Living” or “Physical Environment” = Dead Animals/Plants/ Vegetation

LO1: Identify components that make up an ecosystem – E/D/C The base “Non-Living” or “Physical Environment” = Dead Animals/ Plants/ Vegetation

Try and use these in your food web…

LO1: Identify components that make up an ecosystem – E/D/C TASK: 5 MINS Draw a basic food web for a woodland using your cards to help Add arrows to show the direction of energy flow from organism consumed to the consumer Extension: Can you add 2, 3 or 4 extra living and non living components into your food web?

Learning Objectives: Ecosystems Have you meet your Learning Objectives today? Learning Objectives: Ecosystems LO1: Identify components that make up an ecosystem – E/D/C  Y/N LO2: Classify the components of an ecosystem – D/C   Y/N LO3: Justify the most important role within an ecosystem – C/B/A/A* LO4: Conclude how an ecosystem can be affected by human activity - B/A/A* GCSE PROGRESSION

Producers, Decomposers, Herbivores, Carnivores, Omnivores LO2: Classify the components in an ecosystem – D/C Individual ecosystem components can be classified as: Producers, Decomposers, Herbivores, Carnivores, Omnivores What is a Producer? Plants, which use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide for energy What is a Decomposer? Organisms, which obtain energy from decaying matter What is a Herbivore? Animals, which eat plants What is a Carnivore? Animals that eat other animals What is an Omnivore? Animals that can eat both plants and animals Task: 5mins Code each of your Food Web components into the classifications: Producers, Decomposers, Herbivores, Carnivores, Omnivores

Weird Nature! The Surinam Toad… LO3: Justify the most important role within an ecosystem – C/B/A Weird Nature! The Surinam Toad… http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/life/Suriname_Toad#p028qnkn

LO3: Justify the most important role within an ecosystem – C/B/A TASK: 5 MINS Discussion: Q) What would happen if there were too many predators in an ecosystem? Q) How will the Surinam Toad play an important part in the swamp ecosystem? Q) What would happen if you took the toad out of the ecosystem altogether? Try and use suitable keywords in your answers: Producer, Consumer, Decomposers, Carnivore, Herbivores, Predator, Prey,

LO3: Justify the most important role within an ecosystem – C/B/A TASK: 7 MINS GCSE GEOGRAPHY! What do you think the most important components in an ecosystem are? Why? “I THINK …. Because… However!… Producers? Decomposers? Herbivores? Carnivores? Omnivores? Peer Assessment Criteria: 1 reason = C 2 Reasons = B 3 Reasons = A (A+2 opposing reasons =A*)

LO4: Conclude how an ecosystem can be affected by human activity - B/A/A* Human activities that could affect an ecosystem TASK: 10 MINS 1. Create a spider diagram to show a range of human activities that could potentially affect an ecosystem 2. Expand each activity with how it would change and impact the ecosystem Activity, e.g. car noise pollution from roads through woodland Peer Assessment Criteria: 3 activities with impacts = B 4 activities with impacts = A 5+ activities with impacts = A* Effect, e.g. scared animals move away from noise. This means less herbivores to consume the plants/producers.

PASS THE POST IT PLENARY List one component of an ecosystem Then pass it on TASK: 5 MINS List one component classification in an ecosystem Then pass it on List one human activity and its impact on an ecosystem Then pass it on
