Vocabulary Chapter 2: Lesson 1 Producer consumer Herbivore Carnivore Omnivore Scavenger Decomposer Food chain Food web Energy pyramid

Producer An organism that can make its own food. Examples: grass, trees, algae, phytoplankton A- Consumer

Consumer An organism that gets its energy from eating other organisms. Example: herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and scavengers A- producer

Herbivore Consumers that eat only plants Examples: caterpillars, rabbits, and deer

Carnivore Consumers that eat only animals Examples: Wolves, snakes, and walruses

Omnivore Consumers that eat both plants and animals Examples: crows, humans, and bears

. Carnivore that feed on dead organisms Scavenger . Carnivore that feed on dead organisms Example: catfish and vultures,

Decomposer organisms that break down biotic waste and dead organisms and return the material to the ecosystem. Example: mold, bacteria, and mushrooms

Food Chain A series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy. Example: plant→grasshopper →Red fox

Many interlapping food chains in an ecosystem. Food Web Many interlapping food chains in an ecosystem. Example: page 47

Energy Pyramid A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web.
