Leave No Trace Kayaking Everett Mountaineers Adapted from Center for Outdoor Ethics

7 Principals of Leave No Trace Plan Ahead and Prepare Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces Dispose of Waste Properly Leave What You Find Minimize Campfire Impacts Respect Wildlife Be Considerate of Other Visitors Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics

Take only photos, Leave only footprints (or leave no trace at all!)

#1 Plan Ahead and Prepare Educate Yourself - Know permit rules, group size limits, public vs. private beaches Plan Your Trip - Check tide and current tables, obtain and study charts, leave a float plan. Plan Your Meals - Avoid leftovers and repackage food to minimize waste and breakage (no glass). Bring Proper Gear - Be prepared for weather, hazards, and emergencies.

#2 Launch, Land, and Camp on Durable Surfaces https://youtu.be/VzLDs8p1AUk

#3 Dispose of Waste Properly Pack Out Garbage – yours and other’s* Pee in tidal zone, or durable surface. Poop in a hole (carry that trowel or baggy)

What is Waste? Anything that doesn’t belong in an environment

#3 - Dishwashing Scrape dishes Pre-wash in sea water? Use biodegradable soap Dispose of waste water Strain first Disperse in tidal zone or 100 ft from fresh water or Concentrate in sump hole

#4 Leave What You Find Take only pictures, leave only footprints. Leave flowers, rocks and all other natural features undisturbed. Respect cultural sites – shell middens

#5 Minimize Campfire Impacts Bring a backpacking stove and use it If fires are necessary, consider pit fire in tidal zone – burn all wood, disperse ash Collect small pieces of driftwood in tidal zone – only if it is regenerated often

#6 Respect Wildlife Stay at 200 yards from whales, seals and birds. Avoid nesting and rest areas Do not feed wildlife, pack out all uneaten food. Store food in well-sealed containers, suspended from tree branches -12 feet above ground, 10 feet away from trunk.

#7 Be Considerate of Others Share the beach – keep kayaks together Respect people’s desire for solitude. Keep noise down. If you must listen to music, use headphones. Use bright gear and apparel only when on the water.

Time for a Quiz!
