PPD 631 – GIS for PPD Welcome! Bonnie Shrewsbury and Barry Waite - Instructors

PPD 631 – What we want you to learn an overall, general knowledge of GIS an appreciation and critical eye for maps how to use the software (now, not forevermore) an awareness of the variety and breadth of GIS applications You won’t learn all there is to know about GIS. This is just an introduction.

PPD 631 - Components Lectures – introduce the next tutorial topic. purpose: to teach concepts prior to each tutorial Tutorial book – ideal GIS experience. purpose: to learn how the software is supposed to work GIS20 book – real-world GIS experience. purpose: to learn how to use the software in the real world Project – your own real-world GIS project. purpose: to apply what you’ve learned throughout the class Reflections Paper – tell us what you learned. purpose: give us feedback on what worked or didn’t Speakers – real world examples from GIS professionals. purpose: provide diverse examples of GIS

Things to Know You will not get detailed feedback on each assignment All your fields are related This class may lead to a job The Spatial Sciences Institute is here to support you We want you to succeed, so let us help you do that!

PPD 631 – Who are you? What should we call you? What is your degree program and emphasis? What kind of work do you do? What do you want to do when you grow up? What is your interest in GIS? What is your knowledge of GIS? Is this your first time on jury duty?

PPD 631 – Projects Project guidelines are on the course web site (barrywaite.org/gis.htm) We will add an optional project help day after the last regular class We recognize that what seems like a good topic at the time may not work out. We will work with you to make your experience a success! Writing help is available We will share them on line if you would like

PPD 631 – Schedule notes Breaks are NOT formal. If we can designate some time for a break, we will, but otherwise, please take breaks whenever you need them. Do not wait for an announcement. You must be present to win! Please be here on time for each meeting so we can make the most of our working together. If you have scheduling issues, we will work something out. No, we cannot do this as a weekly class.
