Aims of this Afternoon Inform you about staff in Year 3 Outline what your child will be learning this term Clarify homework expectations Give details of how you can support your child Clarify uniform expectations Discuss any medical issues

Meet the Year 3 team Class Teachers: Ms Williams (Graphite Class) Ms Harman (Ruby Class) Teaching Assistant: Mrs Eavis Learning Support Teacher: Mrs Oun (Maths) Ms Lambert(English)

English In English this half term we will continue to work The Power of Reading – our book is called ‘The Pebble in my Pocket’ – an information book about the earth’s history, taking the reader through 480 million years of the pebble’s journey. Children will have the opportunity to: To explore an information text in depth To come to know a complex history through talk, reading, writing poetry & stories, drawing and drama To present understandings in writing, drawing and performance

English We will also continue to focus on Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) in Year 3. We will revise terminology from Year 2 (such as suffix, prefix and adjective) and introduce new terminology such as clause, consonant and vowel. We will be having standalone grammar lessons each week. A new spelling rule will be sent home each week and the children will be introduced to this at school. They will have 5 words to learn and then be given 3 new words that follow the same spelling rule.

Maths In Mathematics your child will learn: ● to recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens, ones). ● To compare and order numbers up to 1000. ● To read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals and in words. ● To count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100; finding 10 or 100 more or less than a given number. ● To add and subtract numbers mentally. ● To solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division. ● To identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations

Explaining, proving & working collaboratively Key ideas in Maths Explaining, proving & working collaboratively Mixed ability – asked for explanations to prove their findings Access to range of resources & encouraged to used regardless of ability Problem based – explain solutions Misconceptions addressed – children to work backwards to identify / explore / unpick them so it becomes more meaningful
