Guiding Principles Research! Funder and ‘what’s out there’ Follow guidelines faithfully, but try and start a conversation Monitoring & Evaluation Logic-frame or ‘Theory of Change’ model for your work Apply in time! Reporting – progress & financial Create a solid, long-term relationship Applying again for continuation or new funding if appropriate.

The Issue ‘Lead with the Need’… What social issue/problem are you trying to address? How do you know it’s an issue/problem? How big is it? Who have you consulted and how? How is this directly influencing your plans? Why is your organisation best placed to address the problem? Who else is already doing what and how well?

Competition & Partnerships “Think of other orgs in the sector as potential partners, not just as competitors” Complements your organisation’s ‘offer’ Collaboration → Ideas → Innovation Combining your strengths Sharing resources (saving £, adding value) Added value for funders.

Specifics What do they need from your organisation? Put yourself in their shoes… Outcomes / storytelling combination S.M.A.R.T.! Quantify value of your work Value For Money (training, networks, In-Kind, expertise…) Documentation & additional materials Partnerships – selection criteria, value, clarity of roles, agreements Risks & mitigations Competitive process!
