The Proper Pattern of Prayer, Pt. 1 Matthew 6:9-10 Prayer is “beyond any question the highest activity of the human soul” – Martyn Lloyd-Jones The Proper Purpose of Prayer is to talk with God – not to impress men The Proper Practice of Prayer is to seek God’s will confident He hears & answers

The Model for Prayer Matthew 6:9-13 It is the model for prayer that Jesus taught His disciples – cf vs. 5,6,7,8,9 Jesus commanded them, “Pray, then, in this way / manner” Jesus did not pray this prayer The power of prayer is in God, not in the words said.

“Our Father” Matthew 6:9 Defines our relationship with God Two divisions of men: 1 John 3:1-10; Ephesians 2:1-10; John 3:3-21; 1:12 Children of God – John 1:12 Adopted into God’s family – Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:4-7

“Our Father” Matthew 6:9 As His children, we have access to and intimacy with God “Our Father” – the family is large, we are not to be selfish

“Who Art in Heaven” Matthew 6:9 This differentiates God from man - Numbers 23:19 God is not limited in resources God is not limited in wisdom

“Hallowed Be Thy Name” Matthew 6:9 This sets the tone of our prayers We approach God with reverence – Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8 To “Hallow” = make holy; sanctify

“Hallowed Be Thy Name” Matthew 6:9 Believe God exists – Hebrews 11:6 Believe what God has revealed about Himself in the Scriptures – cf. Rom. 1 Speak of God with reverence – Prov. 1:7; Exodus 20:7 Have godly behavior – Matt. 5:16

“Thy Kingdom Come” Matthew 6:10 It is the kingdom of God Desire for the establishment of the promised kingdom – 2 Sam. 7:12; Isaiah 9:6-7, etc. Desire for Jesus to reign here & now

The Present Kingdom of God A Revealed Mystery – Matt. 13, etc. It is Now Present in Part Part of the Gospel Message - Acts 8:12; 19:8; 20:25; 28:23. Col. 1:13; Rom. 14:7 Future restoration – Romans 8 Jesus now in Heaven – Heb. 12:2 We are citizens of Heaven – Phil. 3:20 We are God’s ambassadors – 2 Cor. 5:20

Conclusions Believers can approach God in prayer with confidence – Heb. 4:16 God’s child can call Him “abba” We can have complete confidence in Him for God is not like men

Conclusions In hallowing His name, we approach Him with proper respect We long for His return and the full manifestation of His kingdom We pledge to live in the present as His loyal subjects
