Reformation Vocabulary Foldable – pg 17 Monday September 25, 2017 Add the following to your table of contents: Bell Work Q1W5 – pg 16 Reformation Vocabulary Foldable – pg 17 What was the Inquisition and which European country’s participation in the Inquisition is the best known? Who was Martin Luther? Why did the Pope eventually excommunicate Luther from the Catholic Church?

William Tyndale & John Calvin William Tyndale, an English professor, felt that people should be able to read & interpret the Bible on their own. He translated the Bible into English (Much of which is in the King James version) & was eventually executed. John Calvin became the religious leader of Switzerland in 1541. He preached predestination and banned any activities that distracted people from their faith. Calvin hoped to make Geneva an example of a good Christian City for the rest of the world.

King Henry VIII In 1534, King Henry VIII of England broke away from the Catholic Church & made himself the head of the Church of England, the Anglican Church. Unlike Tyndale & Calvin, the king chose to break away from the Church for personal reasons rather than religious. The king became frustrated when the pope refused to grant him a divorce from his wife. He didn’t change many practices in the church, so today it is still very closely related to the Catholic Church.
