Unit 3: Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events ?

Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson students should: Define global events Describe the roots sports from the amateur beginning in the 20th century and more recently the move towards professional sportspersons. Describe briefly which sports tend to be amateur and which are professional and the role that sports associations have in the classification of sports Describe the means by which amateurs retain their amateur status and yet can gain financial support Assessment: A*-C Grade = more in-depth answers and extension work D-G Grade = answer most questions at foundation level LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events

Starter: What do we mean by Global Events? Try and name these global events, work in small teams Athletics World Championships Rugby World Cup Cricket T20 World Cup Rugby League World Cup Football World Cup The Winter Olympics Commonwealth Games The Summer Olympics LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events

Task 1: Being the hosts... Where were the last major global events that you can think of? Where are the next major global events that you can think of? You have 5 minutes to think about the possible advantages and disadvantages for a host nation when staging a global event. Think about: Facilities. Jobs. Transportation. The impact on future participation. LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events

Being a host nation: Advantages Building better sporting facilities. Regeneration Increased income for local businesses More jobs Better transport systems. Sportspeople = role models = increased participation. Good publicity and tourism. Possible profit! LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events ?

Being a host nation: Disadvantages New facilities cost a lot. - £7.25b to build the Olympic 2012 park. - Montreal: 30 years to pay £1.5b of debt! Buildings may be unused ('white elephant') Less jobs after the event More jobs Personal cost (e.g. Taxes) - £33.33 a household for Londoners (2008). Displacement of people - Rio 2016: slums vs Olympic park Political reasons/demonstrations LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events ?

Task 2: Olympics: Amateur vs Professional! What is the difference between the two? Professionals: Get paid for playing It's their full-time job Amateurs: Don't get paid for playing Do it when they are not working For enjoyment Olympic Games were meant to be for amateurs BUT WHY??? TRADITION!!! Winning = medals and recognition. But the difference between amateur and pro became blurred. Sportspeople were rewarded for their success with more than medals LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events ?

Task 3: Olympics: Amateur vs Professional! Discussion Time: read the slide and discuss the information with your partner Think about these people: Eastern bloc athletes (1970/80s) Tennis players (excluded from 1924-1988) The 'Dream Team' (Barcelona 1992) US Army World Class Athlete Program Join the Army, train all year and don't do any work! 1981 - the IOC dropped the term "Olympic Amateur", allowing sportspeople to earn appearance fees and prize money. How much did Usian Bolt earn from Athletics in 2015/16? $300,000 in prize money $24.9m from sponsorship, endorsements, appearance fees etc. LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events ?

Task 4: Who makes the final decision on participation rules? International Sports Federations (IAAF for Athletics, FIBA for Basketball, FIFA for Football etc) LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events

You decide where best to play the description Task 5: Mix and Match Education supports participation at the highest level You decide where best to play the description Sporting excellence is rewarded with a free education/accommodation etc. School/University receives prestige for sporting excellence. TWO-WAY STREET. Further education with dedicated daily training. Learn from professional coaches. Sportspeople get indirect payments through an organisation/appearance/prize money. This can cover training and living expenses. SCHOLARSHIPS SPORTS COLLEGES TRUST FUNDS SPORTS COLLEGES TRUST FUNDS SCHOLARSHIPS LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events

Climate Finance Geographical location Tradition Culture Task 6: Why do certain countries develop excellence in specific sports? There are 5 main reasons! What are they, discuss as a group Mountains = Winter sports Altitude = Distance runners No water = Sailing / Surfing??? Geographical location Cold (snow/ice) = winter sports Mild/warm = best for outdoor games Extreme heat = difficult for most athletes Climate More money / funding = Better facilities & more opportunities Less money / funding = Substandard facilities & less opportunities Finance Society passes sport onto the next generation. Woven into the fabric of society. Tradition Ethnicity Social background Economic status Culture LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events

Give young performers access additional support / medical support / diet advice / equipment etc. Provide funding for full time training. Support performers so they can live near top facilities. LS (Unit 3) Reasons and Opportunities for Participation in Physical Activity 3.3: Global Events
