Recap Moses and God recovering from Israel worshipping a false God Moses has intimate conversation with the Lord on moving forward past this event Moses asks for God to, essentially, fully reveal Himself to Moses. God refuses a full revelation, but agrees for Moses to see some aspect of Himself Moses returns to Sinai for another 40 days and God reveals some of Himself to Moses

Recap – God reveals Himself Exodus 34:1-3 – Now the Lord said to Moses, “Cut out for yourself two stone tablets like the former ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered. So be ready by morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain. No man is to come up with you, nor let any man be seen anywhere on the mountain; even the flocks and the herds may not graze in front of that mountain.”

Recap – God reveals Himself Exodus 34:4-6 – So he cut out two stone tablets like the former ones, and Moses rose up early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and he took two stone tablets in his hand. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the Lord. Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;

God renews His covenant Exodus 34:10 – Then God said, “Behold, I am going to make a covenant. Before all your people I will perform miracles which have not been produced in all the earth nor among any of the nations; and all the people among whom you live will see the working of the Lord, for it is a fearful thing that I am going to perform with you.

God renews His covenant Exodus 34:11-12 – “Be sure to observe what I am commanding you this day: behold, I am going to drive out the Amorite before you, and the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite. Watch yourself that you make no covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, or it will become a snare in your midst.

God renews His covenant Exodus 34:13-17 – But rather, you are to tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and cut down their Asherim - for you shall not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God - otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land and they would play the harlot with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone might invite you to eat of his sacrifice, and you might take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters might play the harlot with their gods and cause your sons also to play the harlot with their gods. You shall make for yourself no molten gods.

God renews His covenant Exodus 34:27-28 – Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

God’s renewed covenant Note that this is more of a renewal of the previous covenant that God made with the people. The former commands are still firmly in place, and are to be obeyed, and He reiterates some of these later on in chapter 34 God again commits Himself to the task of driving out the inhabitants of Canaan for Israel

God’s renewed covenant He then issues a stern warning for Israel to not make covenants and deals with the people of Canaan, and for good reason: Doing so will become a snare to Israel Israel was to tear/cut down and smash the alters and sacred pillars of Asherim You shall make for yourself no molten gods Why do you think God added this one in?

God’s renewed covenant God’s warning of what would happen if they made covenants with the people of Canaan and did not destroy their idols: “…otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land and they would play the harlot with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone might invite you to eat of his sacrifice, and you might take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters might play the harlot with their gods and cause your sons also to play the harlot with their gods”

Moses face shines! Exodus 34:29-30 – It came about when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the testimony were in Moses’ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him. So when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. Moses begins wearing a veil to cover his face when he spoke with the people

Work on the tabernacle begins What was the tabernacle? Simply put: a mobile place of worship It was where God would dwell among the people of Israel How was it built? Israel donated items to be used in the construction People with abilities were to contribute their time and effort to the project God also empowered Bezalel with the skills necessary to build the tabernacle

Constructing the tabernacle Exodus 35-39 – Covers the construction of the ark 39:42-43 – So the sons of Israel did all the work according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses. And Moses examined all the work and behold, they had done it; just as the Lord had commanded, this they had done. So Moses blessed them. Exodus 40 – The tabernacle is set up, all items put in place. God gives specific instructions on how they are to accomplish it

God’s presence in the tabernacle Exodus 40:34-38 – Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Throughout all their journeys whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out; but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up. For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.
