Galatians Bible study

Galatians 3:10-12 Understanding mercy (Jewishish) Prayer. Review. Our text. Do we understand sin? Judicially? Do we understand mercy? Judicially?

The principle behind understanding grace legally Luke 7:40-47: “And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Teacher, say it.” “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

Vs. 10 “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” How might the learned Jew understand this?

The Mosaic Law had 613 Commandments 248 positive 365 negative 7 Deuteronomy 10:20 - On taking an oath by God's Name. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. 42 Numbers 28:11 - On the New Moon, Rosh Chodesh, additional offering. And in the beginnings of your months ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the Lord; two young bullocks, and one ram, seven lambs of the first year without spot. 209 Leviticus 19:32 - On honoring the old (and wise). Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD. 30 Leviticus 20:23 - Imitate not the ways nor practice customs of idolaters. And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them. 191 Leviticus 23:14 - Eat not green ears of new crop, before bringing an offering. And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 321 Exodus 16:29 - Not to walk beyond permitted limits, eruv, on Shabbat. See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

No one is sin-less How about the Gentile? Did he “Continue in all things?” Romans 2:12-16: “For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.”

Grace Law Gentile Jew Promise

Vs. 11 “But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” Is it evident? Evident because of our inability. “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:2-4. This again reminds us then of what faith is. Faith is the gift of the knowledge of and trust in Christ.

Remember this slide? Inherent goodness

No condemnation to those in Christ Vs. 12 “Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.” The Law, Galatians, is not of faith. What do you claim? Jesus says, “…God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already…” Why is the world already condemned? Paul’s teaching us all. Law Condemnation Gospel No condemnation to those in Christ
