Middle-Class Values The middle class had rules & expectations for every occasion. Even a small middle class household was expected to have a cook & a maid. The Middle class also divided labor between men and women.
The Ideal Home Men went to work at an office or shop to support the family. Women controlled the home. They raised the children Directed the various servants This created a Cult of Domesticity Home was a nest for kids Refuge for the husband Wives were self-sacrificing
Women’s Struggles A number of women’s groups emerge in response to women’s issues. Temperance Movement Setup to ban alcoholic beverages. Women’s Suffrage Pushed for equal rights particularly the right to vote. Both were long but successful fights.
Public Education In the late 1800’s governments begin to setup public schools. Generally only middle class children attended. High Education expanded during this time as well. More Colleges & Universities Some women start attending
Medical Advancements Improved medicine keeps the population growing rapidly. Louis Pasteur’s Germ Theory Proves germs exist and cause disease. Joseph Lister starts sterilizing surgical tools and washing his hands. Improved hospital care saves people’s lives Mainly due to better hygiene.
Science Expands John Dalton’s Atomic theory Showed that atoms are basically alike Geologists begin to question the Church about the age of the Earth. Charles Darwin develops the Theory of Natural Selection The idea that nature chooses the strongest and they survive.
Social Darwinism Thinkers after Darwin applied his theory to society as well. It was used to justify actions in business, war, and politics. Encouraged racism and unethical practices in the name of survival.
