Harriet Tubman and the Underground railroad Objective: Produce your own piece of art to represent one aspect of Harriet Tubman’s extraordinary life or the Underground railroad in general: in the style of Jacob Lawrence

Jacob Lawrence Born 1917, Died 2000. Moved to New York when he was 13 and enrolled in art class in Harlem. Dropped out of HighSchool at 16 but stuck with the art classes. Became internationally famous for his paintings showing the various struggles of African-Americans in the USA.

What should you draw? First of all you should draft in pencil on rough paper - we have a very limited supply of good paper: kindly donated by the art department. Not too complicated: look through your notes on Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad and decide upon a ‘theme’: the final picture will be quite small so you don’t want it to be too crowded.
