Unit 3 Printed Media

A few questions… What is news? Where do you get your news? Who controls the news? Is news always bias?

Agree/Disagree A news story should always be based on facts? Most news today is not worth paying attention to. All news is propaganda.

Agree/Disagree Facebook is a better source for news than Twitter Twitter has changed the world more than Facebook. Television is a better source for news than the internet.

Headline & Masthead Headline = extra-large font across top of front page, placed above or below the masthead Masthead = information about the newspaper, usually found at the top of the editorial page

Kicker A short, catchy word or phrase over a major headline Can you identify the kicker on this New York Times front page?

Who is the better “kicker” in this photo?

Lead First paragraph of a story, usually telling the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) and H (how). How many W’s can you identify in the following lead? Is there an ‘H’?

Hong Kong (CNN) -- China's first lunar rover is expected to land on the moon on Saturday, less than two weeks after it blasted off from Earth, according to Chinese media reports. The landing will make China one of only three nations -- after the United States and the former Soviet Union -- to "soft-land" on the moon's surface, and the first to do so in more than three decades.

Can you speak a ‘lead’ based on the information from the following New York Times front page?

Cutline and Credit Line Cutline (caption) = information below a picture which describes it. Credit line = Acknowledging the source of a picture Can you identify both in the following slide?

China's first lunar probe to land on the moon this weekend By Sophie Brown, CNN updated 3:32 AM EST, Fri December 13, 2013

Hard News (Breaking News) Hard News (Breaking News) = up-to-the-minute news and events that are reported immediately. Can you give an example of what is breaking news and what is not? What do you think soft news is?

Snowstorm hits US Midwest, Northeast, December 2013 Is this Breaking News?

Shanghai tops education ranking When it comes to mathematics, reading and science, the OECD says Shanghai teens are the best in the world. Breaking news????? Or…soft news??????

Edward R. Murrow Why are reporters powerful people?

Agree/Disagree Because of social media, reporters are becoming less relevant and are less powerful.

Paparazzi What is a paparazzi? Agree/Disagree: the paparazzi is a good thing.

Think about it… For tomorrow…. What is propaganda? Can you find an example in print media? What role does photography play in print media? Can you find a powerful photograph in print media? Why media???? What is the purpose or purposes of print media???? How does the source of media impact meaning?
