Spatial Data Infrastructure 14/05/2018 Spatial Data Infrastructure Feedback on exercise data pres. 2005/2006-I: by Ron van Lammeren

1. Which SDIs did you choose? No. NSDIs No. of students % 1. Netherlands 11 28 2. New Zealand 4 10 3. Ireland 3 8 4. Australia 5. Germany 2 5 6. Switzerland 7. Croatia 8. Flanders 9. UK 1 Scotland 11. Luxemburg 12. Chile 13. Iceland 14. Belgium No. NSDIs No. of students % 15. Mexico 1 3 16. Serbia 17. Indonesia 18. California

2. Which datasets did you choose? Category Names Land use Land survey Cadastral Corinne land cover National Parks Forests Natura 2000 Infrastructure Highway roads Road network Railways Railway Stations Infrastructure National cycling routes Harbours Water Rivers Water bodies Lakes Geomorphology Elevation Height data Lithological map Other Addresses demography Natural hazards

3. Could you easily locate and obtain the datasets you needed? Country Difficulty Remarks Netherlands Easy Pros: Easy to obtain, “click and view”, direct download cons: some difficulty due to language barrier, many search results  difficult to select the most relevant New Zealand - Ireland Australia Con: Large size of datasets Germany Medium/ Difficult Con: could not easily obtain data Switzerland Croatia Easy/ Medium Cons: language barrier, inconsistency of data Flanders United Kingdom Medium Relatively easy Cons: cannot find the link to the viewer itself Country Difficulty Remarks Scotland Easy - Luxemburg Easy/ Hard Con: could not discover data Chile Medium/ Easy Cons: language barrier, inconsistency of data Iceland Difficult Generally difficult to obtain and locate Belgium Mexico Pros: easy to find the desired datasets Serbia Only con: language is only in Serbian Indonesia California

5. Process of obtaining data…

… and using in ArcGIS online Uploading to ArcGIS online Sometimes difficult due to ArcGIS online dataset size restrictions Map services quiet easy to use

6. Which step was the most difficult? Metadata miss the information about download Getting the actual data (problems with download) Language problems, local languages The choice of right search terms Need to log in first- in some cases you have to pay for obtaining larger datasets Download link difficult to find

7. Propose the solution to the problems Provide link to data without registration needed Make user- friendly geoportals (Simplify geoportals reduce the linked websites for obtaining the data) Comparison of the metadata results Use also English as a common language

Most of the data possible to obtain !!

Is it possible to upload datasets? “After searching through both geoportals, I have to conclude that this is not possible. This probably works in the way that governmental entities and private companies have agreements on who provides what data..” “I could not find how it works. However I found out you need to get a (free) account and you will be able to upload the metadata from your own organization.” “The users can upload their dataset using shared visualization column in community page, but they need to log in first because the page is restricted. The users also need to log in if they want to suggest new dataset and share their experiences using the dataset from this portal.

Summary In most cases the data can be obtained The most difficult is to find location with link to real data Available map services instead of real data Netherland and New Zealand are the most user friendly NSDIs

Thank you for your attention
