St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on 17 March in many countries all over the world. The holiday celebrates St. Patrick, who is the patron saint of Ireland. In Ireland it is a national holiday, and no one goes to work. In the United States and in Great Britain, it is not a national holiday.

St. Patrick came to Ireland in 432 to convert the Irish to Christianity, from paganism. According to Irish folklore, St. Patrick used shamrocks to teach the Irish about the Holy Trinity, an important belief of Christianity. St. Patrick died on 17 March 461.

It became an official religious holiday in the 1600s, and an official national holiday in 1903. Today, St. Patrick's Day in Ireland is less religious and is mostly a celebration of Irish culture and heritage.
