Advanced Performance Assessments Based in part on NASM Sports Performance Training Textbook © 2017 NPTI Colorado | Slide 1| Revision 7 (3/26/17) JR

Lecture Objectives Understand considerations for determining which fitness assessments are chosen Learn advanced performance assessments Describe the purposes of performance assessments Choose and properly administer assessments to clients

Performance Assessments Performance assessments can be used for clients looking to improve athletic performance. Performance assessments typically measure a combination of: Upper extremity stability Muscular endurance Lower extremity agility Overall strength

Performance Assessments Advanced performance assessments: Davies Test Shark Skill Test YMCA Bench Press Test T-Test Before detailing the specific protocols for the advanced performance assessments, it is important to ensure you have a grasp on several critical assessment basics.

Fitness Assessments Review 5 major considerations that help determine which fitness assessments are chosen: Client’s exercise goals Exercise/medical history Current fitness abilities Attitudes about assessments Equipment and facilities available

Fitness Assessments Review Purpose of fitness assessments: Baseline data for future comparisons Identification of strengths and weaknesses Assist in establishing appropriate exercise intensity Assist in goal development Identification of areas of potential injury or contraindicated activities Record showing prudent judgment with the designed program

Fitness Assessments Review Pre-test instructions you would give a client 24-hours before the testing session: Wear comfortable clothing, socks, and athletic shoes if available. Drink plenty of fluids during the 24-hr period before the test(s). Refrain from eating, smoking, illegal drugs, and drinking alcohol or caffeine for 3-hours prior to the test(s). Do not engage in strenuous physical activity the day of the test(s). Get adequate sleep (6-8 hours) the night before the test(s).

Fitness Assessments Review 4 majors factors that influence fitness testing accuracy: Client factors Personal Trainer factors Equipment factors Environmental factors

Fitness Assessments Review The proper order of the assessments is critical for optimal performance, recovery, and accuracy: Resting measurements Non-fatiguing tests Performance Assessments (*Davies *Shark Skill Test *T-Test) Muscular strength tests Muscular endurance tests (*YMCA Bench Press Test) Aerobic tests

Advanced Performance Assessments Advanced performance assessments allow trainers to learn information about their intermediate, advanced, or athletic clients’ performance capabilities. ADVANCED performance assessments: Davies Test (not suitable for clients who lack shoulder stability) Shark Skill Test (progression from single-leg squat assessment) YMCA Bench Press Test T-Test

Advanced Performance Assessments DAVIES TEST Purpose: Assesses upper extremity agility. Assess upper extremity stabilization. Procedure: Position Place two pieces of tape on the floor, 36 inches apart. Have the client assume a push-up position, with one hand on each piece of tape.

Advanced Performance Assessments DAVIES TEST Procedure: Movement Instruct the client to quickly move his or her right hand to touch the left hand. Perform alternating touching on each side for 15 seconds. Repeat for 3 trials. Reassess in the future to measure improvement of number of touches. Record the number of lines touched by both hands

Advanced Performance Assessments SHARK SKILL TEST Purpose: Assesses lower extremity agility. Assesses lower extremity neuromuscular control. Procedure: Position Position client in the center of the grid, with hands on hips and standing on one leg.

Advanced Performance Assessments SHARK SKILL TEST Procedure: Movement Instruct client to hop to each box in a designated pattern, always returning to the center box. Be consistent with the patterns (clockwise or counter clockwise). Perform one practice run through the boxes with each foot. Perform test 2 times with each foot. Keep track of time. Record the times. Add 0.10 seconds for each of the following faults: *Non hopping leg touches ground *Hands come off hips *Foot goes into wrong square *Foot does not return to center square

Advanced Performance Assessments SHARK SKILL TEST Results:

Advanced Performance Assessments YMCA BENCH PRESS TEST The YMCA Bench Press Test measures dynamic upper body muscular endurance. The YMCA Bench Press Test is appropriate for intermediate, advanced, and athletic clients.

Advanced Performance Assessments YMCA BENCH PRESS TEST Purpose: Assesses upper extremity endurance (anterior musculature). Procedure: Position Select the proper resistance for your client: MEN WOMEN 80 pounds (36.4) kilograms 35 pounds (15.9 kilograms) Explain and demonstrate proper bench press technique Set a metronome to a cadence of 60 bpm, which is equivalent to 30 bench press repetitions per minute.

Advanced Performance Assessments YMCA BENCH PRESS TEST Procedure: Movement Have the client, beginning with the arms extended and a shoulder width grip, lower the weight to the chest. Then, without pausing, the client should raise the bar to full arm’s length. The movement should be smooth and controlled, with the bar reaching its highest and lowest positions with each beat of the metronome. Terminate the test when the client can no longer lift the barbell in cadence with the metronome. Use an online calculator to determine client’s results

Advanced Performance Assessments T-TEST Purpose: Assesses lower extremity agility Procedure: Position Set out 4 cones as illustrated on the next slide (5 yards = 4.57 m, 10 yards = 9.14 m). The subject starts at cone A.

Advanced Performance Assessments T-TEST

Advanced Performance Assessments T-TEST Procedure: Movement On the command of the timer, the subject sprints to cone B and touches the base of the cone with their right hand. *They then turn left and shuffle sideways to cone C, and also touches its base, this time with their left hand. *Then shuffling sideways to the right to cone D and touching the base with the right hand. *They then shuffle back to cone B touching with the left hand, and run backwards to cone A. The stopwatch is stopped as they pass cone A.

Advanced Performance Assessments T-TEST Procedure: Scoring The trial will not be counted if the subject cross one foot in front of the other while shuffling, fails to touch the base of the cones, or fails to face forward throughout the test. Take the best time of 3 successful trials to the nearest 0.1 seconds.

Advanced Performance Assessments T-TEST Procedure: Scoring MALES (seconds) FEMALES (seconds) Excellent ˂9.5 ˂10.5 Good 9.5 to 10.5 10.5 to 11.5 Average 11.5 to 12.5 Poor ˃11.5 ˃12.5
