The Five Capitals For Success Joanne Stern, PhD

Points to Remember Family success flows from the health and well-being of human, intellectual, social and spiritual capital.

Points to Remember Success flows from the health and well-being of human, intellectual, social and spiritual capital. Having family dinners at least 5 times a week results in kids who use less tobacco, marijuana and alcohol, have higher grade point averages, less depression and fewer suicide attempts.

Families become increasingly more influenced by non-blood family members who may not have the same values as you do.

Questions for your Family Are you aware of the influence of outsiders— non-blood line family members—on your family? 2. What are you doing to teach and establish the values you want your family to have?

Families become increasingly more influenced by non-blood family members who may not have the same values as you do. Affluent kids are more susceptible to severe anxiety, deep depression that can lead to suicide, and addiction than kids who grow up in inner city ghettos.

Questions for your Family Are your kids—especially your sons—struggling with growing up in the shadow of a successful father? 2. How are you nurturing your kids—even your adult children? 3. Are you aware of mental, emotional or learning challenges of anyone in your family? Addiction? 4. How are you intentionally developing healthy values and a strong moral compass in your family?

Points to Remember The way you were parented determines how you will parent. It takes great awareness and determination to change that pattern.

Transparency leads to trust and understanding. In creating your family council, the process is as important as the product because you are developing interaction and trust among family members.

Questions for your Family 1. How transparent is your family? Do you have secrets or is information shared openly? 2. Do your kids have the skills to have difficult conversations and to confront when necessary? 3. Have you created a sense of team? Do family members have each other’s backs? 4. Have you set up your family council for self-governance and a forum to talk about important family issues?
