What are the Characteristics of Bones? The word SKELETON comes from the Greek Words meaning “ a dried body .” This suggests the skeleton is dead.

Bones Are complex living structures that grow, develop, and repair themselves. Bones are also strong and lightweight.

Compact Bone A thick layer of bone which is hard and dense.

Spongy Bone Long bones have a layer of spongy bone at the ends and under the compact bone which make it lightweight.

Bone Marrow 2 types of soft connective tissue. RED bone marrow fills in small spaces of the spongy bone. YELLOW bone marrow produes most of the blood cells. Found in middle of the bone and stores fat.

Cartilage Is strong connective tissue that is more flexible than a bone. Found in ear, nose.

Osteoporosis A condition in which bones become weak and break easily.
