Life During World War 2! Written by Alfie Stratton. Designed by Harry Stratton and Alfie Stratton.

Evacuation The evacuation of children from cities in Great Britain in World War 2 was extremely frightening! Hundreds of thousands of children of all ages were sent to the countryside because war was imminent and the cities were considered bombing targets!

Soldiers of world war 2! Two million British men aged between 18-27 years were forced to fight. Some boys lied about their age, they should have been 18 years old to fight in war but were actually as young as 14 years old! Men called up could have been working for the Army, Navy or RAF (Royal Air Force). Everything that these soldiers endured was extremely frightening, shocking and terrifying. Men who objected to the war were either put in prison or executed!! A reserved occupation was a job which was so important to the running of our country that these men were not allowed to serve in the war. Reserved occupations included farmers, doctors and police officers.

THE BLACKOUT! Britain was blacked out on the 1st September 1939, 2 days before the outbreak of World War 2! At night windows and doors had to be blacked out. Streetlights were switched off and car headlights were deflected downwards. Pilots and enemy aircraft found it harder to navigate and drop bombs. The effect of the blackout was more accidents due to people being hit by cars and tripping and falling in the dark!!

WOMEN DURING WW2! World War 2 changed the lives of women in Great Britain in many different ways. Many women lost their husbands, their sons, and even their fathers!! Women were expected to fill the jobs that had previously been carried out by men. Traditionally before WW2 women were expected to be housewives, nurses, servants, office workers or shop assistants. Women were expected to retrain for jobs like mechanics, engineers, ship building, tank drivers, plumbers and Air Raid wardens!! Huge numbers of women surprisingly joined in with the war, both in the armed forces and in the Land Army! The Land Army was set up so women worked on the farms to increase the amount of food grown in Britain in the war.
