the first explorers and circumnavigating the world

The first explorers The first human beings lived in Africa and then they moved slowly to other areas. The first explorers of the ancient world were the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Vikings. They lived many centuries ago. The ancient Egyptians built boats from papyrus reeds which they tied together. In the boats that the Egyptians built, they travelled long distances. Greeks Vikings Romans The Phoenicians came from an area that is now as Lebanon. They were excellent shipbuilders and they became the richest merchants in the Mediterranean area. The ancient Greeks sent ships to explore the coasts around the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and founded colonies. Alexander the Great, of Macedon, was a great Greek military leader. He and his army travelled to conquer many lands and founded seventy cities.

Circumnavigating the world The first person who proved that the world was round was an Italian navigator called Cristoforo Colombo. In Spain he was known as Cristobal Colón. He believed he could find a sea-route to islands that Europeans called Spice Islands. Columbus believed he could reach the Indies in the east by travelling towards the west, across the Athlantic Ocean. Like all explorers, he was a brave man and an excellent navigator.

Two great explorers circumnavigate the world Ferdinand Magellan and Sir Francis Drake where the two greatest navigators of the sixteenth century. Both followed a similar route in his voyages around the world. Here we are going to show you some information about the navigators:

Ferdinand Magellan Magellan was born in northern Portugal in 1480. In March 1505, at 25, he joined the Indian Navy in the fleet of 22 ships sent to install Francisco de Almeida as the first viceroy of India. These were the most important ships that took part in the voyage:Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria and Santiago Here is the route he followed:

Sir Francis Drake Birth: 1543 Tavistock, Kingdom of England Died: January 28, 1596 (53 years) in Portobelo, the currently Panama He was Queen’s Elizabeth rigth hand and also made a voyage around the world, but not for metting new colonies, he was a pirate and he looked for ‘El dorado’ an important Aztec city that supposedly was near Cuzco in southern America. During his life he made many discoveries and conquered many colonies but his goal was ‘El dorado’ . He died before founding it. Here you can see his route around the world:
