Waste Management, Inc. Best Practices In Waste Management: Towards a Circular Economy

2017 Waste Management

We all know that when you throw something away, there really is no “away”. The material has to go somewhere. Traditionally, the waste industry looked like this flow diagram: products are manufactured, used, discarded, and either recycled or landfilled. A number of years ago, WM began transitioning to a different paradigm that recognized that materials have inherent value and THAT value needs to be captured to create another GOOD- not to be at the end of a value chain. M Material entering the cycle The Circular Economy Reducing Waste in Manufacturing WM is partnering with companies to reduce waste and energy use, while increasing recycling and recyclability M Material entering the cycle Returning materials and energy to the supply chain Recovering materials and energy to continue in the waste stream cycle Growing Recycling across North America WM Recycling Services continues to invest in recycling programs across North America While we used to be only looking at end-of-life solutions, in 2015, we are looking to create a Circular Economy where everything has a new life and we are considering the overall greenhouse gas emissions impact of products AND processes. Let’s be thoughtful about looking at the entire life cycle and embrace a range of solutions for improving our environment. Recouping Landfill gasses WM converts landfill gases to electricity and transportation fuel Separating Organics WM Organics Recycling is converting organics to beneficial use, like composting, mulch and energy generated at anaerobic digesters HARD-TO-RECYCLE AND non-recyclable materials TO ENERGY PRODUCTS WM has invested in several companies that convert materials that would otherwise be waste, into syngas, which can be made into fuel products

Waste operations overview Waste Collection -Hauling- not standardized, no cost benchmark, maintenance is not part of contracting -Need to change public perception of waste pickers and industry -Need to have program that is inclusive and transparent Aggregation -Regionalized collection and processing for commodities exchange -No economy of scale yet -Collection is multi-layered with many transactions -No EH&S standards -Lack of facilities to segregate commodities Marketing -Local Processors purchasing smaller quantities of commodities -Small collection points -Multiple transactions before commodities are processed - Facilitate circular models with manufacturing - Evaluate material use in design 2017 Waste Management
