The Rock Cycle A LAB

Crayon Rock Lab Each pair of students needs to collect the following from the front of the class: 3 Crayons- different colours Piece of wax paper/tin foil Vegetable Peeler Rock Cycle handout

Crayon Rock Lab You have be given a sample of crayon rock. List some characteristics about the rock:

Igneous Rock formed by cooling and hardening of hot liquid rock Characteristics Solid No fossils No bands

I I Igneous Rock

Crayon Rock Lab Start with only one crayon, create a pile of crayon shavings on your wax paper. Once you have shaved your entire crayon place it onto the wax paper

Weathering and Erosion Igneous Rock Weathering and Erosion Sediments

Crayon Rock Lab Now fold over the wax paper and press down on the pile as hard as you can Repeat this same process for the other two crayons Unwrap the wax paper very carefully Describe what this looks like:

Sedimentary Rock formed when sediments are pressed and cemented together Characteristics Visible layers- curved or flat Has pores and holes Has fossils Makes up 70 % of the rock on the earth

Compaction and Cementation Weathering and Erosion Sediments Compaction and Cementation Weathering and Erosion Sedimentary Rock

Crayon Rock Lab Place your shavings into the metal dish and place it onto the baseboard heater Mrs. Ashton will tell you when to take it off Take the dish off and let it cool Describe what your rock looks like now

Metamorphic Rock formed when rocks are changed by heat and pressure Characteristics Rarely has fossils Alternating bands of light and dark rock Rarely has pores or holes

Weathering and Erosion Igneous Rock Heat and Pressure Heat and Pressure Metamorphic Rock Sediments Weathering and Erosion

Crayon Rock Lab Place your dish back on the heat again until the wax has melted into a smooth pool of liquid wax and all the colours have blended together What has it turned into?

Igneous Rock Melting Magma Melting Metamorphic Rock

Crayon Rock Lab Allow the wax to cool What rock type has your crayon rock returned to? Igneous
