Physical and Chemical Properties Chapter 8 Lesson 2

What are physical properties? PHYSICAL PROPERTIES- something that can be observed about an object without changing the identity of the object MASS- The amount of matter in an object Measured in kilograms or grams Use a balance to measure mass WEIGHT- how strongly gravity pulls on an object Measured in Newtons (N) or pounds (lbs) Use a scale to measure weight VOLUME- measures how much space matter takes up Measured using Milliliters(mL) or Liters(L) Use graduated cylinders to measure volume

What are physical properties (continued) DENSITY- the amount of mass for each cm3 of a substance An objects ability to sink or float Objects that are denser will sink Objects float as a result of buoyancy-resistance to sinking The formula for finding density is mass/volume

Boiling Points & Freezing Points The temperature at which a substance freezes is called its freezing point This changes the substance from a liquid to solid The freezing point of water is 0 degrees C The temperature at which a substance boils is also a physical property The boiling point is when a substance changes state from liquid to gas The boiling point of water is 100 degrees C

Let’s Try One… Answer- Mass Mass is measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg)

You try… Answer-C We measure volume using a cylinder

You try… Answer- A You know that we use milliliters (mL) to measure volume. Texture is something that is felt (touch) so an object can feel smooth or rough.

Here’s another… Answer- A The colder the temperature, the lower the degrees, therefore, to freeze a substance you will need the coldest temperature= 0

What are chemical properties Describes the way a substance reacts with other substances Flammability is a chemical property of a substance that describes its ability to catch on fire or burn When some substances are burned they change color-this is also evidence of a chemical property When left outside, some metals will corrode CORROSION- is when metals combine with nonmetals from the environment=RUST

Chemical Properties Practice Answer- A Color is a chemical property because it can change (when the banana rots)

Let’s Try another…
